Worth a watch. "The Economics of Eating" looks at how our food systems work and why growing and buying local matters more than ever. Close to home for us, and food for thought next time you're picking up your veges.

Nothing goes to waste at Greenyard Veges

Our chillies came in thick and fast this season, so rather than let any go soft in the fridge, we turned the last of the harvest into homemade sweet chilli sauce.

Gretta was on sauce duty and did everything by the book. Deseeded carefully. Chopped carefully. Washed her hands like she was scrubbing in for surgery. Less than 10 minutes later, she blew her nose with a tissue, completely unaware her hands were still armed and dangerous. Mouth and nose burst into flames almost instantly. Turns out chilli oil doesn't care how careful you were three steps ago.

The sauce itself, thankfully, came out perfect. Rich, glossy, packed with flavour, and bottled up ready for the pantry. Just don't ask Gretta to make the next batch without gloves, a face shield, and possibly a hazmat suit.

Yum!

Nothing beats a good word from the people who've grown with us.

We get comments like these quite often:

๐Ÿ“ "They grow lots of strawberries."
๐Ÿ“ "I bought some last year, and they grew so well I need more."
๐Ÿ“ "My father bought some off you and has been hunting for more of the same."

That's the whole reason we do this the way we do: spray-free, grown right here in Gorge Road, and chosen because they do well in Murihiku growing conditions.

If you've had strawberry plants off us before and they're thriving in your patch, we'd love to hear about it too.

We're not back at the Southern Farmers Market just yet (keep an eye on our page though, we might jump in for a pop-up soon), but strawberry plants are available now at the roadside stall, or we can arrange an Invercargill pickup, just flick us a DM to sort the details.

The pine behind them's still standing solid and green, but these bare branches won't stay bare for long. From blossom to fruit is one of our favourite stretches of the year to watch unfold.

Nothing to pick just yet, but it's a good nudge that the growing season is properly waking up. Anyone else seeing the first blossom on their own trees?

Support Local, Eat Fresh, and Stretch Your Budget! ๐Ÿฅฌ๐Ÿ›’

At Greenyard Veges, we love being part of the Southern Farmers Market whanau! Itโ€™s not just a place to share our own produce - itโ€™s where we get to stand alongside incredible local growers and makers who put so much care into feeding our community.

As local producers, we know the hard work that goes into growing quality food, and we love supporting our fellow stallholders. Plus, you simply can't beat the value - getting a tote filled with crisp leeks, Whitestone turnips, Southland swede, and beetroot for just $12 shows how far your budget can stretch when you shop local!

Come support the hardworking growers and producers who keep Murihiku eating fresh. Bring your bags and take on the $20 Market Challenge this Sunday!

Southern Farmers Market opens Sunday at 9:30am at the Invercargill Railway Station. See you there :)

๐Ÿฒ Backing each other, kai season to kai season

Our own gardens are having their winter rest, but that doesn't mean we stop eating local - it means we lean on the growers around us who are still bringing kai to the table. Tonight's boil-up is puha from The Vege Basket and taewa from Amalia Organics, both picked up today at the Southern Farmers Market

This is the whole point of a local food system: when one grower's patch is resting, another's is producing, and everyone eats well. That's not competition, that's community. And it's exactly why we show up for other stallholders as much as we hope people show up for us.

Support your local growers, whoever's turn it is to be in season. See you at the farmers' market ๐Ÿงบ
