It’s not often we get the privilege of working in a historic, pre 1900s built home & our recent restoration project presented all the flavours of decades past, in our findings among the floorboards, both above & below.

We venture into every project, never really knowing the mysteries that hold a floor together, sometimes the shortcuts previously made, will become visible, sometimes the pure engineering prowess of hand forged nails &/or those with “rose heads” will test our patience, in their inability to be countersunk with ease, or if the house was built with the formidable “Totara”, we’re in for some fun in fitting additional support beneath the boards, with that ear shattering “ping” when today’s nails hit such hard wood. It’s no wonder these houses are still standing 🙏♥️

Fortunately, we have the gear, the know how & more importantly, the wherewithal to fit that support & we’ll win, not the Totara! Lol!

Our recent restoration presented central heating vents from the 60s, hand forged nails & rosehead nails from goodness knows when & as coating trends come & go, the all too familiar DARK, very old varnish oil that was clearly designed to never come off, not to be out done by hidden, sunken floors beneath old chipboard… BUT… there-in lies the treasure!

We used the hidden, sunken boards (positioned between the lower level ceiling & upper level floor), to replace the chipboard. It’s the latter find that keeps the history in the home, using original boards that’ve remained protected for decades, (albeit between storeys), so the character remains.

Matai native timber is full of personality, its beauty will now be ever present for these homeowners, because our coatings reveal “with detailed clarity”, every branch flex & shimmer, every knot, all the hearty colours & sappy bloodlines & they raise the grain slightly to reveal the internal texture of the tree, something we cannot see when talking to said tree, in the garden.

In short…. We bring your native timber floors to life…

In long… our coatings soak in, preserving the boards for more generations of family feet to come…

& that’s what makes us smile… 🥰

PS: We’re on display at McLean Park’s Hawkes Bay Home & Garden Show from tomorrow, Friday 28th August - Sunday 30th August. Come & have a chat, if a flooring restoration, re-style, repair or refresh, is part of your future renovation plans👍

The word “Birthday” doesn’t start with an “F”, but today we’re celebrating Flash Floors NZ - Hawkes Bay’s 8th Birthday in true floor restoration style…. Working, lol!

8 years ago today, I started Flash Floors NZ, giving my newly made business card to a beautiful, very vivacious, elderly neighbour, so when the day arrived she may need her floors restored, I’d be there in a flash!

True to form, she rang for a chat, requesting we pop round & view her very sun-bleached kitchen floor, also needing carpet gone & recycled native timber laid, to achieve a simple, clean-look, throughout her living space.

Gone, is the bleached floor
Gone, is the awful dark stain
Gone, is the old carpet

Her kitchen & nook now present beautiful Matai with all its natural colours, lively grain, sappy bloodlines & a few shimmery branch flexes here & there… & she loves it!

Such a lovely surprise to get her phone call & having now completed her new look, 8 years later, I’ve given her a “new” business card, bottle of her favourite wine & bouquet of flowers in keeping with her colour scheme, as a personal, much appreciated, “thank you” 🥰

FINISHED !!

Floors NZ have completed an entire house refresh, with a timeline of just 4 weeks, under new home ownership, with new tenants champing at the bit to move in.

This 60s build home had been tenanted for “decades” with low quality repairs throughout… until new owners bought the property in June & requested we do a full surface refresh, plus floor restoration in every room of the 3 bed, 1 bath, open plan kitchen/dining/living residence.

So… removing 2 layers of wallpaper plus backing off 60s aged gib brought some colourful language over the first 6 days (me), while Leon followed suit with repairing, sealing, skim-coating entire walls (all of them), under & top-coating, while I migrated from room to room in conjunction with his progress, starting the floor restoration process… & under the old black goopy adhesive, was “beautiful” Matai floorboards.

Ceilings - only surface NOT damaged

Walls - every.single.wall had multiple holes punched through, with the worst being a 3.5m wall containing 11 punched holes of varying sizes, all needing full repair. We tossed up suggesting a full re-jib, but on comparison, the costs would’ve been too high for the client.

Doors - whether a bedroom, hallway, toilet, bathroom or wardrobe door… more holes in all but 2! Wardrobe doors not worth keeping so off they came, swapped the only swappable door for the bathroom & the lounge door remained in place.

Door Handles - stopped working years ago, replaced or repaired as we went.

Fireplace - non compliant hearth, needed a new one built, so we did that too… correct depth front to back, woodtex base & new tiles & trims & job done👍

PowerPoints & Light Switches - NONE worked without buzzing, so in came the electrician. Yay!

A separate post with relevant photos will explain the process, but this video puts 4 weeks of solid work into perspective, with just the 2 of us on the job. No corners cut, that’s not our MO!

If you’ve bought a do-up & need some advice or contracted help, don’t hold back, call us, all it takes is a chat 👍

Raised your carpet or vinyl & found hardwood flooring?
Wondering whether to sand it back or not?
Should you tackle it yourself or call in the specialists?
What will it cost?
How long will it take?
Will we have to move out?
Will there be any dust?
Who’ll fix the broken bits?

All the popular & valid questions we get asked & exactly the reason we pop round for a chat, view your flooring scenario, provide some options & basically fill in all those doubting gaps, with easy to understand, thorough solutions.

If this sounds like your situation, just like the recent bathroom, Rimu floor repair & restoration we’ve completed in Mahora, give us a call & we’ll clock in a time to visit. Shower sub-floor needed strengthening, a few old pipe holes needed plugging & presumably where an old chip heater once sat, needed recycled Rimu stitching in, in offset pattern. Thanks to our diligent owners doing the hard yards in staple extraction, our restoration task became “easy peasy” 👍.

Cyclone Gabrielle has certainly woven itself into the back & beyond with varying accounts of damage done to Hawkes Bay properties… some of those we’re still being called to, to repair, rectify, restore or replace, 3 years on from such a monstrous event.

This beautiful Mediterranean styled home with its terracotta tiled floors, suffered a silt flow through its lower level, ripping the seal & in some cases, the glaze from the tiled surface.

Terracotta is porous. Sooo porous, it accepts anything spilt onto it, so if not protected by the right coatings, “everything” will stain it.

We hit this floor with a heavy duty water-based chemical strip, scrubbed the living daylights out of it, removed fungal stains & built up silt from the grout lines.. nothing a wire brush won’t handle.. sterilised the floor, then sealed & polished it. VOILA!

Several layers later & the coating has provided a stain resistant barrier to future spillages, the polish now also protecting the seal.

If you’re still battling the ravages of Cyclone Gabrielle in your floors, please feel free to get in touch & we’ll pop round for a chat👍😊

Adding to the previous Reel & the process we had to undertake in rectifying this clients flooring issue, what initially appeared like a small unstitch & replace vinyl plank project, grew into something far more sinister….

We felt incredibly sorry for our homeowners & the situation they found themselves in, but for their realistic perspective on the issue facing them & “the only” way through it (albeit costly), this was the opportunity to get it right.. permanently.

With their upstairs floor already in Rimu T & G, they made the decision to lay the same hardwood floor through their Hallway & Laundry below. Rimu overlay boards with a 200mm cover & 15mm thick, machined by in Hastings, were purchased & on arrival we graded them as usual into specific boards for the entrance vs under the stairs & for solid tongues & grooves, ensuring stability once laid.

Each photo is narrated to provide detail & transparency, in the event anyone viewing this post, may have a similar problem. If you do, please get in touch.

A flooring project with various complexities & “many” moving parts, not withstanding tack-off & curing times with the concrete prep products, while our homeowners were off-site for a week or so. Time management certainly had us on our toes with this job, the results now speaking for themselves & we’re looking to return to restore the upstairs when the weather’s a little warmer.

Once upon a time, there was a family with a vinyl planked hallway & a plank popped up right in the middle 🫣

What are we to do ? Call that’s who 👍

A little cheeky intro, but without some lightheartedness & a very thankful family after our findings of the last 2 weeks, one could easily get bogged in the dark depths of a flooring issue compounded by the practices of a novice, under previous home ownership, a few years ago.

If you’ve got vinyl planking in place, that pops up in the middle, it only does this due to the pressure beneath having nowhere else to go… because the 6-10mm perimeter gap required when laying planks, was never allowed for, instead, skirtings, door jambs & architraves were fitted on top & fitted tight. As the ground temps heat & cool, you need that 6-10mm perimeter gap in place, to allow for expansion & contraction of the planks… otherwise the problem these owners were faced with, WILL happen.

HOWEVER… this wasn’t “the only” issue…..

A more serious situation revealed itself, as we unstitched the planks… the self levelling compound previously laid, wasn’t allowed to dry or cure properly, before laying the planks.

Then the self levelling compound wasn’t screeded smooth prior to laying the planks, leaving many high lumps unattended to. If you let this happen, the planks will definitely pop up.

HOWEVER HOWEVER!….. this also wasn’t “the last of the problems”….

Take a look at the video first, then look at the next post, where every photo is narrated. If you don’t moisture-proof your concrete foundation in preparation for laying a floating floor…. Moisture is trapped, buildup occurs & your floating floor is ruined. That’s putting it nicely….

The procedure we’ve applied, has now given the foundation in this area of the home (which was an add-on), the right protection, including for the beautiful Rimu Overlay floating floor we’ve now installed & resurfaced.

It’s always a good feeling when your clients ask you back to do a floor refresh, or a maintenance service & “this” floor is an oldy & a goody, owned by friends & business colleagues Riccardo & Sara from Casa Ahuriri…

5 years ago, we attacked this floor for the first time & 5 years on, it was looking somewhat tired…. After all, being the former Speights Restaurant & for the last few years “Casa”, it’s certainly had some foot traffic & in need of a makeover….

& that’s exactly what it got !👍👍👍
If your floor looks like the first bunch of photos in this reel & you’d like a refresh done… get in touch, we’ll respond in a Flash 😊😊
