ElectroNet is proud to be designing and delivering five new transportable Traction Substations for KiwiRail’s Wellington Metro Network.
Each substation will house 11 kV (AC) switchgear, a 2.5MVA transformer, a rectifier and 1500V (DC) switchgear.

Starting with the pilot site, we’ve moved from bespoke, one-off engineering to a modular, repeatable approach, with the buildings constructed by our trusted partners Brightwater & Coldstore in Greymouth, then electrically fitted and pre-commissioned by ElectroNet Services in Nelson before being transported to sites across Wellington.

It’s a pretty impressive journey for a building that starts life in Greymouth and ends up helping keep Wellington’s trains moving.
ElectroNet Consulting completed the electrical design, working alongside EDC - Engineering Design Consultants Ltd on structural design, Dalman Architects for architectural and Aurecon for heating and cooling design.
Come along to EEA 2026 to hear the full story behind this proven template for building electrical infrastructure at scale.

You can also hear directly from KiwiRail about the Wellington Metro upgrade and the role these five new substations will play in enabling faster, more frequent services.

Thumbs up from our grads during their presentations yesterday!

Our grads had the chance to showcase something they’ve been working on, from substation and transmission design projects through to power systems analysis, earth testing, commissioning and renewable energy connection studies. It was a great insight into the projects and experiences they’ve been getting stuck into throughout their rotations.

It was also fantastic to hear so many of them acknowledge the support, mentorship and guidance they’ve received from our senior engineers and technical specialists along the way.
A great showcase of their work and development throughout our Graduate Programme, and we also heard from those who joined remotely and aren’t pictured here!

How lucky are we? 😀

The team from ElectroNet Group were back for another Meals from the Heart with the Rānui whānau!

On the menu this evening was a delicious spread of BBQ meats (the steak was a standout!), pasta bake, salad, beetroot, coleslaw, mixed vegetables and bread rolls. To finish, everyone enjoyed slab cake, cupcakes and fresh fruit for dessert. 🥩🥗

Everything was cooked to perfection, rivalling the incredible meal served by the first ElectroNet team who visited in June. The Rānui whānau were so grateful for this winter warmer, with smiles all around. It was a special evening that brought everyone together over great food and conversation.

From all of us at Bone Marrow Cancer Trust, and the whānau we support, thank you for your care, generosity and for creating such a memorable evening! 🫶🫶

As part of our community sponsorship, we’re proud to now support West Coast junior rugby and the sporting opportunities provided for young players across our region.

It was fantastic to see our logo in action on team tops during the recent U52kg Seddon Shield Rugby Tournament hosted in Greymouth. Great to see the next generation of players taking the field!

Thanks Bill Phillips for the photos.

✨ Celebrating 100 years of lighting up Greymouth ✨

Back in 1926, the local Council switched on Greymouth’s first streetlights, a historic milestone, the occasion was celebrated as a moment that would transform the town and the way people lived.

A century later, we’re proud to continue that legacy. From those first streetlights to today’s modern electricity network, Westpower and the ElectroNet Group have been there through generations, keeping streets lit, homes warm, businesses operating, and communities connected.

A special thank you to Graham Schaef for sharing this fantastic piece of history with us and helping us celebrate the journey that began 100 years ago. Here’s to another century of powering the West Coast.
