Norma has been with us for almost a year now and she has totally transformed. She is very sweet, smart and super cuddly and she absolutley adores Nic. She loves me too, but I am definitely the spare human in her estimations.

She's also loves sharing the bed, which is all well and good except that it's like cuddling with a hairy bicycle.

We wouldn't change a thing.

Kia ora Dunedin, just some friendly info for the folk who are new to using a fire.

🔥All types of fires need to be cleaned regularly.
Even those that are labelled "Eco" or are low emission. It reduces the risk of chimney fire and allows the fire to work properly.

🔥It is also required by your insurance as part of your maintenance/duty of care responsibilities. We recommend checking with your insurer how often they need this done for compliance.

🔥Spring time is the best time to have your fire serviced - a clean chimney will allow your fire to perform better during the troublesome spring weather conditions we usually have.

🔥We work all year - there's no "season" to wait for your chimney to be swept.

Please feel free to share with others who may not know this information - we come across a lot of people who are unaware how important servicing is.

Yay for the first egg after their winter downtime. They are a cross breed that lay delicious and very pretty green shell eggs, but they don’t lay over the short daylight months. Hence my excitement 😊

We see a lot of potential fire risks and have met a number of people who have experienced house fires.
One very stark quote that I'll always reminder is "fire is just looking for an opportunity to kill you".
Don't give it one.
Stay fire safe by making sure you have working smoke alarms, keep a meter from the heater, and if in doubt, have your chimney cleaned out.

Brrrrr! Many parts of the motu are feeling the cold, which means there are fires and heaters cranking in lots of households today!

So, this is a reminder to keep a one metre clearance around your heater or fireplace. Soft furnishings such as blankets, clothes, beds and couches don’t need to be touching a heat source to catch fire, if they are too close, they will burn!

🔥Hot tip: If you’re unsure, measure it. Remind yourself how big a metre is because ‘she’ll be right’ won’t cut it!

Most of you know that I love animals but one of my favourites are hedgehogs. Dunedin Hedgehogs are the main port of call when someone finds one of sick or injured, and no one else will help.

I've just voted to help this local charity get some much needed funds. Can you help too?

Don't forget to have your chimney swept!! Fires need to be swept regularly for safety and to make sure they work efficiently.

If it has been a while since you last had it swept and checked then please book it in.
We see so many fires where early intervention could have saved time, money and a lot of stress.

Please contact us, or your regular sweep, to make sure it is safe and performing at its best. An inspection and sweep is $100 for most parts of town.

If your favourite heat source is your fire then make sure it's in tip top shape by having us check it and sweep it regularly. At least once every two years is good, or yearly for gold standard.

We were once called the "fire doctors" by a wee lad, which is kinda true, because we help keep you and your fire safe in the same way as regular visits to your GP. We pick up on small things that can become bigger problems if not identified early.

This is because we not only sweep the chimney, we check the fire to make sure it is in good condition and discuss all the wee things you can do to ensure its safety and efficiency. Small tweaks can make a big difference over the course of a season, and most people learn at least one thing that could save them money.

Birds are the losers today with the news that new draft guidelines will prevent practitioners like Avian Empire from providing telemedicine.

Avian Empire are utterly amazing and literally save bird's lives. I would not have been able to care for our birds in the way that they deserve to be cared for without their help.
