Join the Māori Language Moment at 12pm today and celebrate te reo, wherever you are, however you choose! You could greet everyone you see with 'kia ora!', start your zoom call with 'mōrena', listen to the Waiata Anthems playlist or even play Fortnite in te reo.

Check out https://www.reomaori.co.nz/ideas for more awesome ideas!

No matter how well you can kōrero Māori, you can be one in a million speakers of te reo Māori by 2040. The Māori Language Movement is an open invitation to all New Zealanders to treasure and celebrate something that is part of our identity - te reo Māori.

Nau mai ki te Wiki o te Reo Māori! And what better way to kick it off than with a map.

Check out this awesome interactive map where you can listen and learn some ingoa wāhi from across the motu:

Click on different places to hear the correct pronunciation. Now you give the pronunciation a try. Spend time saying and practicing different names from the map.

⚠️COVID-19 Update⚠️

As you will be aware, the Prime Minister has announced this afternoon that New Zealand, outside of Auckland city, will be moving to Alert Level 2 from midnight tomorrow night, 7 September.

The announcement included some new rules and guidelines for Alert Level 2, which will impact the way that the University operates. We are waiting now for the Government to finalise and distribute new guidelines for tertiary institutions, which we expect to come tomorrow.

We will then be able to give you detailed information about what teaching and learning at Otago will look like for the remainder of the semester.

Important to note:

-We will remain teaching and learning under Alert Level 3 conditions for the rest of this week. So, if your classes, tutorials, lectures etc, are online now, they will stay that way this week.

-We hope to begin face-to-face teaching where possible from Monday, 13 September.

-We are aware that some students are still in Alert Level 4, in Auckland, or may not be able to return to their campus by Monday for other reasons. We will maintain online learning for those who cannot make it back by then.

-As outlined last week, all exams and final assessments held at the end of this semester will be held online, with a few exceptions for clinical practical exams.

-Information on your exam and final assessments will be sent to you by your lecturers and course-coordinators by Friday this week.

Congrats Emily!

Congrats Emily!

Big congratulations to School of Surveying lecturer Emily Tidey for receiving the inaugural 2021 Survey and Spatial NZ Hydrography Professional Award! Hydrography works to understand what lies beneath our oceans, lakes and rivers, and hydrographic surveyors make measurements of things such as the depth, tide and position of features for so many uses - nautical charts (which make sure ships get around the world safely), habitat maps for underwater areas, understanding coastal erosion, potential tsunami effects, measurements for bridge or dam construction, or even to study history by finding old shipwrecks and submerged artefacts! Because of this Emily’s job is incredibly varied, and as we still don’t know much about what’s under our seas, she says there’s a lot of work for hydrographers out there on ‘Planet Ocean’! Tu meke Emily and congratulations again.

Jobs galore!

Jobs galore!

It’s ALL GO in Surveying! All go as final fourth year students now have a crazy challenge on their hands deciding which jobs to apply for, for next year (and making the decisions even harder, this is just one of the walls that has adverts plastered over it!). Tino pai rawa atu! Of course this is a great challenge to have, and we wish every one of these great Surveying students the best of luck as they embrace the opportunities that come from their hard work as students and an Otago degree. This is the time of year when all final-year tauira across the Sciences are exploring their options for next year, so good luck to you all too. In the photo from right to left are: Raksha Kumar, Devon Allen, Patric Truebridge, Matt McMaster, Tom Scoles and Ken Wang. Karawhuia!

Did you know that Otago has a Mountain Research Centre, or that is has a weather station on the Mt Brewster glacier in Mt Aspiring National Park and has been recording ice melt since 2004? The Mountain Research Centre brings together researchers from Geography and Surveying who explore a whole heap of topics to better understand our mountain regions – ranging from alpine climatology, changes in seasonal snow and glaciers, to avalanche hazard analysis. The mountains of Aotearoa are taonga and all this great mahi is increasing our understanding of how climate change will impact these precious areas.
