Meet Simon Thelwell, Hanham & Philp’s representative in Hamilton.

Simon has been part of the Hanham & Philp team for 11 years and has lived in Hamilton for the past six. Simon oversees projects locally and supports clients throughout the Waikato.

His experience includes new builds, complex earthquake strengthening and major fit-outs, all managed with a keen eye for detail and a strong commitment to quality.

Project Spotlight: CLT Teaching and Administration Block

Hanham & Philp was selected through a pre-ECI tender process to help develop the methodology and final budget for this 1,500m², three-storey Cross Laminated Timber building.

Early contractor involvement allowed the team to resolve budget and logistical challenges before construction began. Through a collaborative value-engineering process, significant cost savings were achieved while retaining the building’s core design features.

Early procurement of the CLT structure also provided time to assess suppliers, confirm compliance and coordinate delivery against the construction programme.

This project is a strong example of how involving the contractor early can protect both the budget and the build.

Project Spotlight: FreshChoice Prebbleton

Hanham & Philp was appointed as main contractor for this greenfield supermarket build through an Early Contractor Involvement process.

An open-book procurement approach allowed civil and structural works to begin ahead of schedule while the architectural and services designs were finalised.

Close collaboration between the client, project managers, consultants and construction team created a seamless build process. Drawing on Hanham & Philp’s supermarket experience, the project was delivered on time and on budget, despite a four-week COVID-19 lockdown.

Project Spotlight: Ilam Health

Built within a tight, active site, Ilam Health required careful planning, clear communication and a considered construction approach to minimise disruption to neighbouring homes, businesses and surrounding traffic.

The project included multiple demolitions, staged site works, base-build construction and high-end tenancy fit-outs across two floors.

With complex building services, fire and acoustic requirements, early coordination was critical. By identifying a clash between the structure and services before it became an issue, Hanham & Philp helped avoid delays and unnecessary costs.
