Project spotlight: Atkore Unistrut, Horotiu

Built to strengthen Atkore Unistrut’s ability to serve New Zealand’s construction industry, this purpose-built manufacturing and distribution facility combines scale, functionality and sustainability.

The development includes a 302m² office, a 1,182m² canopy and an impressive 6,012m² warehouse. Roof water is also collected and reused for toilet flushing, irrigation and garden sprinklers.

“The project was delivered to a high standard, and the finished result exceeded our expectations.”

That feedback from Toby Ferguson, Business Manager for Unistrut Waikato, BOP and Taranaki, reflects the communication and coordination behind the build.

Project spotlight: GEA Farm Technologies, Horotiu

GEA Farm Technologies is a global leader in milk production and livestock systems. Its flagship Northgate premises required a facility that could support its growing New Zealand operations.

The completed development features an 800m², two-storey office and a substantial 3,000m² warehouse.

Despite the challenges of an extended COVID-19 lockdown, Hamilton-based Site Manager Simon Thelwell led the Hanham & Philp Waikato team and contractors through the build.

It’s a strong example of careful coordination, local project oversight and quality commercial construction in the Waikato.

Meet Simon Thelwell, Hanham & Philp’s representative in Hamilton.

Simon has been part of the Hanham & Philp team for 11 years and has lived in Hamilton for the past six. Simon oversees projects locally and supports clients throughout the Waikato.

His experience includes new builds, complex earthquake strengthening and major fit-outs, all managed with a keen eye for detail and a strong commitment to quality.

Project Spotlight: CLT Teaching and Administration Block

Hanham & Philp was selected through a pre-ECI tender process to help develop the methodology and final budget for this 1,500m², three-storey Cross Laminated Timber building.

Early contractor involvement allowed the team to resolve budget and logistical challenges before construction began. Through a collaborative value-engineering process, significant cost savings were achieved while retaining the building’s core design features.

Early procurement of the CLT structure also provided time to assess suppliers, confirm compliance and coordinate delivery against the construction programme.

This project is a strong example of how involving the contractor early can protect both the budget and the build.

Project Spotlight: FreshChoice Prebbleton

Hanham & Philp was appointed as main contractor for this greenfield supermarket build through an Early Contractor Involvement process.

An open-book procurement approach allowed civil and structural works to begin ahead of schedule while the architectural and services designs were finalised.

Close collaboration between the client, project managers, consultants and construction team created a seamless build process. Drawing on Hanham & Philp’s supermarket experience, the project was delivered on time and on budget, despite a four-week COVID-19 lockdown.
