Hot water cylinder maintenance, what you need to know.

Hello to all. If you have recently had a new Vitreous Enamel HWC installed (or you have an old VE HWC, has your plumber explained that these cylinders need maintenance? The makers of cylinders (Rheem NZ) recommend to check-replace the Sacrificial Anode every 8 years, 3 years earlier than that in harsh water quality situations. If the SA fails, the HWC will start to leak at the top of the cylinder where it is fitted.
You can see from the attached photos, that in this instance the water has tracked down and damaged the electrics, resulting in a costly repair bill.

This is an easy enough maintenance job that I am happy to help you with.

It is best to replace the Anodes before they leak, for obvious reasons.

Well, moving a leaking concrete header tank is not the easiest job, so, a valve bypass and a boost for the hot water pressure was the best option.
The owner was delighted.

Another Hot Water Cylinder upgrade, another happy customer.
So now we have a new mains pressure hot water, more storage inside as we have relocated the HWC outside. Now, no chance that the original low pressure 1974 copper cylinder (or brass valves with rubber diaphragms that can split) will start leaking inside.
Upgrading your HWC early is a smart move.

Another rimless toilet installation, another happy customer. The elderly customer was very happy and delighted that this new toilet is higher therefore it is easier for him to access.

Water main leak under a house, before and after. It’s always good installation practice to support pipes whenever possible.

Another water filter installed, another happy family. This particular water filter does not need constant cartridge changing unlike other brands, therefore it is a much better long term financial solution.
