Now is the time to be planting strawberries. A decision I never use to think about was planting either day neutral strawberries or short day strawberries . I personally have both as I like to have a consistent amount of picking through out the season and also a nice early amount to pick too .
Short day varieties: affected by length of days and produce an early crop at the beginning of the growing season peaking in November/December. Varieties I see sold in Christchurch shops are the Camarosa, Ventana and Pajaro
Day neutral varieties: they aren’t affected by day length and they produce later than short day varieties but have a longer of producing period of up to four months . Common varieties sold in Christchurch: Monterey and Albion also sold under the name (Sweet As)
