Not every hot water cylinder replacement is straightforward!

Matt was on the tools in Christchurch today, tackling a cylinder replacement in a particularly tight cupboard.

His first message back to us? “She’s a tight squeeze!” 😂

And with very little room to manoeuvre, it was a job for the jack!

It's all part of the challenge of maintenance plumbing. Every property is different, and sometimes getting the old cylinder out is half the battle.

A burst water pipe underneath a driveway! 💦

Not all plumbing problems are easy to spot — and sometimes the biggest problems are hidden underground.

Our MJR team was called out to a property this week in Cashmere, Christchurch, where a leaking underground water pipe needed urgent attention.

The job involved:

🔹 Locating the source of the leak
🔹 Excavating a section of the driveway to access the damaged pipe
🔹 Repairing the damaged pipework
🔹 Restoring the water supply

WOULD YOU KNOW IF YOUR HOT-WATER CYLINDER WAS STARTING TO FAIL?

Most hot-water cylinders sit quietly in a cupboard doing their job every day — which makes them very easy to forget about.

Until there’s a problem.

While age can be an indicator, it isn't the whole story. We’ve seen cylinders last for decades, and we've also replaced cylinders that have failed much sooner than expected.

There can be warning signs to look out for:

💧 Moisture, drips or staining around the cylinder
🔧 Rust or corrosion
🚿 Changes in the amount of hot water available
🌡️ Water not heating as it normally does
🔊 Unusual noises
⚠️ Problems with valves or other components

But sometimes there may be very little warning before a cylinder fails.

At MJR, we've replaced more than 250 hot-water cylinders since January 2024 — roughly two every week.
