At MJR Plumbing & Gas, we're big believers in supporting other good Christchurch businesses. Running a trade or service business isn't easy, and over the years we've built relationships with other local business owners who share many of the same values we do – looking after customers, doing what you say you're going to do and taking pride in the service you provide.

One of those businesses is AirCare Heat Pump Cleaning, run by our friend Ros and her team here in Christchurch.

We know Ros through our local BNI network, where we've had the opportunity to get to know her and her business properly. That's one of the things we value about BNI – we actually get to know the people behind the businesses we're recommending.

When a Blocked Drain won't budge... MJs don't give up

This kitchen sink was completely blocked when we arrived on site late Monday afternoon.

We tried every appropriate method to clear it:
✔️ Plunging
✔️ Drain cleaning solution
✔️ Drain spring
✔️ Mains water pressure

Despite all that, we could only get the drain partially flowing.

Rather than settling for a temporary fix, we updated the property manager and returned with our water blaster and a second technician to properly clear the blockage.

The culprit? Years of built-up fats and grease combined with a waste pipe installed on a very shallow fall, allowing debris to collect instead of washing away.

After thoroughly cleaning the line, the drain was flowing freely again.

Sometimes the quickest solution isn't the first one you try—it's making sure the job is actually fixed properly.

🚨 Water pouring onto the roof during a property viewing? That's a problem that can't wait.

At 7:45pm on Sunday night, we received an urgent job request from a Christchurch property manager after a sales agent spotted hot water spilling into the roof spouting during a house viewing.

By 8:00am Monday morning, Grant was onsite investigating the issue.

The culprit? A very old Nefa valve had failed, allowing hot water to continuously discharge into the spouting.

✅ Fault diagnosed.
✅ New Nefa valve installed.
✅ Problem resolved.

For property managers, timing matters. Fast action can prevent unnecessary water waste, reduce the risk of further damage, and give everyone confidence that the issue is under control.

🚽 A Running Toilet Isn't Just Annoying... It's Wasting Water

One of our plumbers, Grant, was called out on Friday to investigate a toilet that just wouldn't stop running.

The issue?
After flushing, the cistern continued to refill and wouldn't shut off, meaning water was constantly flowing into the bowl.

In this case, Grant found the inlet valve wasn't shutting off correctly. He replaced the faulty valve, tested everything thoroughly, and had the toilet working as it should before leaving.

💧 A continuously running toilet can waste hundreds of litres of water every day if left unattended, leading to unnecessary water bills and potential damage over time.
