AIRBORNE ASBESTOS - CHILDREN'S PLAY SAND

In late 2025, several children's play sand products were found to contain asbestos. At that time it was not known whether the asbestos could be made into dangerous airborne particles.

This is important because asbestos is most dangerous when it is airborne and small. If asbestos fibres are breathed in, they can lodge in the lungs and cause long term damage.

Recent testing at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) showed that some normal play activities can cause the release of two types of asbestos into the air. This proves that the sand is potentially dangerous, although the level of risk has not really been quantified.

However, we would stress that the main risk factors for developing an asbestos-related illness are (1) the amount of exposure and (2) the duration of exposure.

For example, someone working with asbestos who is exposed to it on a daily basis for hours is MUCH more likely to get an asbestos-related illness than someone who is exposed to a little bit of asbestos in a low-concentration product for less than an hour, once. It is likely that the sand is more towards the lower risk end of the spectrum.

FIRE DAMAGED PROPERTIES

ARL Solutions specialises in remediating fire damaged properties. Recently we dealt with a mid-Canterbury fire damaged house, where there was asbestos contamination from exploded soffits around the property.

Once we dealt with the primary & secondary debris zones around the property, the asbestos surveyor was able to recheck the inside of the house. They then found some fire damaged class A (friable) asbestos containing paper backing to vinyl flooring in the bathroom & toilet inside the house.

That is why the relationship between the removalist & asbestos surveyor/assessor is critical! To get the job resolved & done right, we always work *with* (and not against) professional asbestos surveyors & asbestos assessors.

RECALL OF CHILDREN'S TOYS - ASBESTOS CONTAMINATION

A recall has been issued for several children's toys after asbestos was detected during independent laboratory testing.

Naturally occurring Chrysotile and Tremolite asbestos was found in some samples of a range of Planet Fun brand Funkee Animals and Secret Menu Stretchee Foodz toys, according to Product Safety New Zealand. Exposure would only occur if the product was torn.

The affected products are as follows:

* Funkee Monkee Mega PDQ (Barcode: 622222419295),
* Funkee Animalz Puppies Mega PDQ (Barcode: 622222422288)
* Funkee Animalz Axolotl Mega PDQ (Barcode: 622222174590)
* Funkee Pig Jumbo (Barcode: 622222170899)
* Funkee Monkee Jumbo (Barcode: 622222168452)
*Secret Menu Stretchee Foodz Asst PDQ (Barcode: 622222168155).

The toys were sold at The Warehouse and Farmers from January 2025 to April 2026, and Toyworld and Paper Plus from February 2025 to April 2026.

Planet Fun has advised those who own these products to stop using them immediately, to place them in a double ziplock bag, and to not dispose of the product in the general waste. "Return it to the store you purchased it from for a refund. This may require proof of purchase."

LEAD-BASED PAINT REMOVAL & DEMOLITION

While we certainly base our company model around asbestos removal & being the best there, you might not know that we offer other services. This month, we have kicked of a large-scale lead-based paint removal project (photos from the project) and a hand-demolition of a house in Akaroa.
