🚨 Heads up Builders & Sparkies – Smoke Alarm Rules Have Changed 🚨

We’re still seeing jobs caught out at inspection because the smoke alarm regulations are no longer the old “stand-alone” setup.

📌 Under the NZ Building Code (F7/AS1), smoke alarms in new builds and major renovations must be interconnected.
That means when one alarm activates, they all sound.

The issue?
A lot of builds are still being planned like it’s the old rules. By the time it’s picked up:

Extra wiring is needed

Wireless interlink modules need upgrading

Ceilings or walls may need opening

Costs go up and timelines get hit

💡 Best practice
✔ Plan interconnected alarms at pre-wire stage
✔ Use 240V alarms with battery backup
✔ Consider wireless interconnection to save time and rework
