Eight years with Keystone Trust, and three of their graduates now work here permanently.

That is the part we did not expect when we started. The scholarship was meant to help someone else get going. It turned into a pipeline.

This year's recipient is Yohan, studying a Bachelor of Construction at AUT. Alongside the $5,500 scholarship he gets work experience with us, an industry mentor, site visits and a national cohort of people going into the same industry at the same time.

Eighteen single bedroom units, now handed over to the community they were built for: older residents who, through Urban Plus, are getting brand-new homes.

This project came together through close collaboration between Urban Plus and Miles, from design through to construction and handover. That partnership shows in the result: units that are warm, dry and ready for the people moving into them.

Future tenants followed the build closely, and their excitement was obvious well before the keys changed hands. It's a reminder of what good social housing delivery actually means for the people on the other end of it.

From today, building a minor dwelling got simpler.

The granny flat consent exemption came in at the start of the year: up to 70 square metres, simple design, licensed building practitioner work, council notified before and after. No building consent.

From today it goes further. You can use certified composite structural products under CodeMark. You can reuse your existing water, wastewater and stormwater connections instead of putting in new ones, subject to your utility agreeing. You can modify existing council connections without a consent. And you can continue or upgrade an on-site system rather than replacing it.

In plain terms: the cost and the timeline both come down, and the reasons people gave up on the idea last year may not apply any more.

It is still a building, and it still has to be built properly. But if a minor dwelling has been sitting in the "one day" pile, today is a reasonable day to look at it again.
