Not sure if it’s moss or just rough grass?

If it feels soft and spongy underfoot, looks a bit dull or patchy, and doesn’t grow like the rest of the lawn, chances are it’s moss starting to take over.

It usually shows up in damp, shaded areas where the grass is already struggling.

First step is to deal with the moss properly. Spraying will knock it back, but that’s only half the job. You’ve also got to sort what caused it. Poor drainage, low light, compacted soil, or thin grass.

Fix that, and the lawn has a chance to come back strong. Ignore it, and the moss will just keep returning.

Autumn’s a good time to get on top of your lawn.

This is the window to fix that properly. Strengthen the roots, sort any damage out, deal with weeds before growth slows right down. If you leave it, you’re carrying those problems all the way through winter.
