𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞?

Making an existing home warmer doesn’t have to mean a major renovation. There are a number of simple improvements that can make a real difference:

• Check for draughts around doors, windows and other openings. Sealing gaps is inexpensive and often worthwhile.

• Look at your insulation. If your ceiling insulation is old or inadequate, topping it up can be one of the better investments you can make. Underfloor insulation may also help with cold floors.

• Use your curtains well. Good curtains reduce heat loss through windows. Open them during sunny winter days, but close them before the house starts to cool down.

• Review your heating. Make sure your heating system is appropriate for the space and that you’re heating the rooms you actually use.

• Deal with moisture. Condensation and dampness make a house feel colder. Good bathroom and kitchen extraction, sensible ventilation and fixing leaks all help.

The important thing is knowing where to spend your money. Not every improvement will be worthwhile in every house.

Design freedom through performance modelling

Architects and designers shouldn't have to compromise good design to achieve H1 compliance.

With the recent H1 changes moving the industry away from the Schedule Method, many architects and designers are facing more complex compliance requirements. The opportunity is that calculation pathways and energy modelling provide far greater flexibility than prescriptive schedules.

At Geoff Tune Architecture Ltd, we help architects use the NZGBC ECCHO energy modelling methodology and H1 calculation pathways to optimise building performance without compromising design intent.

Rather than redesigning a project to meet prescriptive requirements, we assess the building as a whole. This can allow larger areas of glazing or more complex designs to be balanced with practical, cost-effective solutions elsewhere in the building envelope, helping clients achieve better value without sacrificing performance.

I'm excited to share that I've successfully completed the 𝐍𝐙𝐆𝐁𝐂 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐫 course and am now officially qualified!
