Prebbleton keeps proving the point: some places just make sense for solar. You've got Canterbury's cracking sunshine hours and those cool, crisp conditions that panels quietly love (they're like us — they'd rather work in a brisk southerly than a heatwave). But let's not give the location all the credit. Great results come from actually reading the site — the roof layout, and how the household really uses its power, not how a brochure says it should.
For this one we fitted 19 Trina panels across three roof sections on a 35° corrugated iron roof, wired into three strings and paired with an Entelar 10kW hybrid inverter. The multi-roof layout meant a fair bit of head-scratching and planning before anyone picked up a drill — but it let us squeeze the most out of the day and keep performance strong from morning to knock-off.
Big thanks to World Solar for the design. We really value teams who get that a good design is about more than just scattering panels across a roof and hoping for the best. You can always tell when a system's been thought through for real-world installation and long-term performance — it makes everyone's life easier, ours included.
And I'm proud of the Grenz Electrical crew, as always. Every site has its own little surprises, but our standard never budges — safe, compliant, tidy, and built properly. (The kind of tidy where you genuinely can't tell we've been, apart from the power bill dropping.)
To the homeowners — thank you for the trust, the hospitality and the good communication start to finish. Good projects are always a partnership, and this was a good one.
Because solar was never just about making power. It's about building a system that keeps quietly delivering for years — long after the novelty of watching the app wears off.
Always keen for a yarn about doing solar properly. ⚡

People sometimes ask what the hardest part of a solar installation is.

Is it carrying panels up a steep roof?

Working in the wind?

Running cables through a roof cavity in the middle of summer?

Honestly, sometimes it's your co-worker's habits 😄

Every team has one.

The guy who puts a tool down "just for a second" and somehow it disappears into another dimension.

Five minutes later:

"Has anyone seen my drill?"

No mate, but half the team has spent the last ten minutes looking for it.

Or the guy who says, "I'll remember where I left it."

That's usually the exact moment we all know we're about to spend the next half hour searching.

The funny thing is that good solar installations come down to the little things. Keeping tools organised, keeping the site tidy, planning ahead, and helping each other out.

A messy site creates mistakes.

A tidy site creates quality.

That's why one of the best habits you can have on a work site is simple, put things back where they belong.

Your future self, and your co-workers, will thank you 😄

And if you're reading this and thinking, "I don't know anyone like that..."

It's probably you ⚡

On this project in Okuku, we installed 22 monocrystalline solar panels across two corrugated iron roofs, configured into three strings, and paired the system with an 8kW hybrid inverter and 2 × 5.12kWh Pylontech batteries. Having two separate buildings created an interesting design challenge, but it also allowed the system to make the most of the available roof space while delivering strong year-round performance.

A big thank you to ZEN Energy NZ for the design. We genuinely value working alongside teams who don't just create a design on paper, but think about how the system will actually be installed, operated, and maintained

There's something about Okuku that sums up why this part of the country is such good solar territory. Strong sunshine hours, those crisp clear winter mornings, and wide-open rural properties with plenty of roof to work with. The opportunity here is excellent — but good results never happen by accident. Orientation, shading, and how the system's actually going to be used across the year all have to be thought through from day one. That's the bit that separates a system that just works from one that works brilliantly.

On this one we fitted 22 monocrystalline panels across two corrugated iron roofs, wired into three strings, and paired it all with an 8kW hybrid inverter and 2x 5.12kWh Pylontech batteries. Two separate buildings made for an interesting design puzzle — but it also let us make the most of the available roof space and deliver strong, steady performance right through the year.

Big thanks to ZEN Energy for this project. We love working with partners who pair real technical know-how with a practical feel for how an install actually goes on site. When a system's designed with real-world conditions in mind, everyone gets a better, more reliable result.

And I've got to hand it to the Grenz team. Every site throws up its own challenges, but our approach never changes — safe, compliant, tidy, and built to a standard we're happy to stand behind long after we've packed up and driven off.
To the homeowners — thank you for the trust, the hospitality and the good communication the whole way through. The best projects are always built on good relationships, every time.

Because solar was never just about generating power. It's about building something that keeps performing year after year, through changing seasons and changing needs.

How do you know if you got a quality solar installation on your roof? 🤔

Most people start by looking at the panels.

The truth is, almost every solar installation looks good from 20 metres away.

The real question is what it looks like up close.

Are the panels lined up properly?

Are the cables secured neatly?

Are the isolators straight?

Are the roof penetrations sealed properly?

Are the labels where they should be?

And most importantly, does the installer still answer the phone after they've been paid? 😄

A quality installation is a bit like an iceberg. The panels are the part everyone sees. The workmanship, compliance, testing, documentation, and attention to detail are the parts you don't see, but they are usually the most important.

One of my favourite tests is simple.

Stand back and look at the roof.

If one panel looks like it had a disagreement with the rest of them, start asking questions.

In all seriousness, good solar is not about making it work today. It's about making sure it still works properly years from now.

The best installations are often the ones nobody notices, because everything is tidy, straight, secure, and exactly where it should be.

And if you need binoculars to find a loose cable, we've probably done our job right 😄⚡
