In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Week, our teams across the motu came together for activities that encouraged connection, reflection and open conversations.

From a webinar exploring the power of social connection to a lunch-and-learn session, these activities provided opportunities to connect, share experiences and talk openly about mental health.

Now, we’re wrapping up the week in Christchurch with our annual Mental Health Awareness Week BBQ & Car Show.

It’s become a bit of a tradition at our Christchurch depot, and it turns out we have quite a soft spot for interesting cars!

The event is always a great conversation starter and a relaxed way to catch up over a BBQ and a shared love of cars.

A big thanks to our Workshop Manager, Grant Thorpe, and the Fleet Team, who led the preparations.

Jerry Gonzaga has been Citycare Property’s amenity cleaner for nearly 15 years, ensuring Christchurch CBD’s high-traffic toilet blocks are cleaned every day.

Many of the places Jerry helps look after are among Christchurch's most visited public spaces, including Cathedral Square, Margaret Mahy Playground and the Botanic Gardens. It's a role that sees him start early, work around thousands of visitors, and help keep facilities clean, safe and ready for use.

After almost 15 years on the job, Jerry has plenty of stories and has become a familiar face to many people who use these spaces.

Citycare Property amenity cleaners contribute so much to the health and wellbeing of communities. Today is Thank Your Cleaner Day. We celebrate our amenity cleaners across the motu, whose mahi helps keep community spaces clean, safe and welcoming.

In Christchurch, we gathered our amenity cleaning team for breakfast to recognise them for their hard mahi. This team looks after over 200 toilet blocks at 170 sites across Christchurch and Banks Peninsula.

Their work supports thousands of people every day, from residents and commuters to visitors exploring our region.

Thank you to our amenity cleaners across Aotearoa for the important mahi you do in our communities. We recognise your hard work, not just today but every day.

When something breaks at a Christchurch library, pool or community centre, someone has to get there, make it safe and fix it. For the past 19 years, that someone has often been Gary Stokes.

As one of our handymen, Gary travels between Christchurch City Council and Environment Canterbury sites every day, handling everything from minor repairs to urgent callouts for vandalism and storm damage. He's also a Permit Receiver and Safety Observer, helping ensure high-risk work on council sites is carried out safely.

He's been part of the team through the Christchurch earthquakes, COVID-19 and everything in between – and he's built the kind of relationships where customers ask for him by name.

"We're often the first port of call. You load up the van with your materials and head out to do the job," Gary says.

As the New Zealand dotterel (tūturiwhatu) breeding season begins, a recent discovery at an unusual location by our team delivering grounds maintenance at Auckland Airport highlights the difference that awareness can make.

While working on site, Kevin and Ryan noticed the behaviour of a pair of dotterels and identified a nearby nest, helping ensure the area could be protected.

The tūturiwhatu is found only in New Zealand and nests directly on the ground, with eggs that blend almost perfectly into their surroundings.

OSM Operations Manager Renuka Narayan (Lata) says the find is a great example of kaitiakitanga in action.

"Taking care of the places where we work includes being aware of the wildlife that shares those spaces. Kevin and Ryan's observation and quick reporting helped protect a nesting site for a threatened native bird."

A great effort from Kevin and Ryan, and a timely reminder to keep an eye out for dotterels and other native wildlife during the breeding season.

Spring's in full swing, and our Open Space Maintenance teams are out across the motu keeping parks, reserves and community spaces looking their best.

In South Auckland, Victoria Sutherland is leading our team. She has spent 30+ years in horticulture – and some of the sites she manages today are the very ones she first worked on as a young gardener.

She joined Citycare Property eight years ago as a team leader and now leads our southern Open Space Maintenance team on Auckland Council's Rima contract, covering Manurewa, Māngere, Ōtāhuhu, Ōtara and Papatoetoe.

One site holds special meaning: Nathan Homestead in Manurewa. “It was one of the first sites I looked after when I was on the tools. I really love that site – it would probably be one of my favourites on the whole contract.”

Victoria’s proud of the culture her team has built. “I want the team to back each other and look after each other. That’s how we succeed.”

Every day, people across Christchurch use recreation centres, community facilities and public venues, expecting them to be safe, functional and ready to welcome them. Behind that confidence is careful planning, coordination and compliance work.

For Bianca Channon, Building Warrant of Fitness (BWOF) and Compliance Specialist, that responsibility extends across about 141 Christchurch City Council buildings. Her work helps ensure critical systems operate safely and reliably for the communities that use them.

A BWOF is much like a vehicle warrant of fitness: it confirms that a building's life-safety systems, including fire alarms, emergency lighting, smoke-control systems and fire doors, are regularly tested, inspected and maintained.

It's work that mostly goes unnoticed – until it doesn't. "People don't see how much work happens in the background. Buildings just run, but when something doesn't work properly, people notice," Bianca says.

Generations of New Zealanders and international visitors have made memories at the Whakapapa Holiday Park lodge, set at the base of Mt Ruapehu in the heart of Tongariro National Park.

Now, thanks to a major investment by the Department of Conservation (DOC), the much-loved lodge has been refurbished to provide safer, warmer and more comfortable accommodation for years to come. Delivered on time and on budget by DOC, Citycare Property and McGregor Construction, the project shows what strong partnerships can achieve.

“From the beginning, there was a strong collaborative partnership between Citycare Property, DOC and the contractor,” says Thomas Parackal, Citycare Property National Portfolio Manager. “Everyone was invested in achieving the best outcome for this project and ultimately for the community.”
