North Canterbury Peonies North Canterbury Peonies is a boutique nursery specialising in breeding and growing tree peonies.

Almost every peony you purchase will be a clone, meaning it's been grown from divisions of a previously registered variety, of which there may be tens of thousands of them growing in people's gardens. Our seedlings, in contrast, are grown from open pollinated seeds collected from excellent cultivars. Just like human babies, each plant is genetically different although it could resemble one of it's parents. Purchasing one of our Exclusive seedlings means you will be the only person in the world to own that particular and unique variety of plant. We also have for sale, divisions of garden and intersectional peonies as well as grafts of woody (tree) peony varieties. All of our peonies are herbicide, pesticide and fungicide free.

I brought some seeds from a nursery in the USA a few years ago - they have a huge patch of the most beautiful singles, I wish I could find the photos. Soft pink, peach, cream, lemon and ivory - they were gorgeous! I was only able to purchase 25 seeds, the first one of about 15 that germinated has started to open. There won't be any more bloom this year but hopefully next year.

This is a cute wee seedling that opened today - the red flares in the centre were literally glowing in the sun.
