A little winter reminder for your Limelight hydrangeas.

As tempting as it might be to cut them back now, it’s worth waiting until late winter or early spring. Limelight hydrangeas flower on new season’s growth, so delaying pruning helps reduce the risk of tender new shoots being damaged by late frosts.

For now, leave the spent flower heads in place to add structure and interest to the winter garden.

It’s hard to believe we’re only 7 weeks away from spring!

While the gardens are still enjoying their winter rest, we’re busy getting through the jobs that set them up for a successful season ahead. Pruning, weeding, mulching and cutting back now gives gardens the best possible start before the burst of spring growth begins.

Reminder - winter is the perfect time to plant roses.

With the plants dormant and the soil still holding warmth, roses can focus on establishing strong root systems before spring arrives. A little effort now means healthier plants, stronger growth, and an abundance of flowers in the seasons ahead.

Spring is one of the most important seasons in the gardening calendar. As soil temperatures begin to rise and plants emerge from winter dormancy, the work carried out now sets the foundation for the months ahead.

Tackling key maintenance tasks in early spring helps plants establish strong growth, improves the overall health and appearance of the garden, and reduces the amount of work required during the busy summer season. From rejuvenating tired perennials to mulching beds and tidying hedges, investing time in the garden now will be rewarded with healthier plants, better flowering, and a more resilient landscape throughout the year.

Two plants that punch well above their weight in the garden. Penstemon ‘Garnet’ and Geranium ‘Pearl Boland’ provide months of colour from late spring through to autumn and continue to be valuable features through the cooler months. Their semi-evergreen foliage helps maintain structure and interest in the garden long after the flowers have faded.

Before & After – Front of House Bed

When we first arrived in December 2024 (second slide should read '24' not '25'), this bed was largely a blank canvas, with only a couple of existing plants worth retaining: a mature wisteria and Rosa Cécile Brünner.

With the beautiful soft pink tones of Cécile Brünner as our starting point, we designed a planting scheme around a complementary palette of whites, lilacs, and purples. The aim was to create a border that feels soft, romantic, and welcoming while providing interest throughout the seasons.

We’re excited to watch the garden continue to fill out and mature over the coming years.
