Eight metres below a heritage building, precision work, no room for shortcuts.
As part of the Canterbury Museum redevelopment under Leighs Construction Ltd, our Protranz team carried out major remediation and excavation works beneath the Robert McDougall Gallery Building.
Starting with the demolition of the existing concrete basement, the team worked around approximately 330 micropiles, excavating down over seven metres beneath the building. With limited access, a heritage structure overhead and a complex pile layout to work around, every stage demanded careful planning, precision and teamwork.
Specialist equipment played a key role, including a Brokk remote controlled demolition robot, which enabled controlled work in the confined underground environment. Excavated material was then removed using conveyor belts, gantry bins and crane lifts, a carefully coordinated operation taking place largely out of sight.
It's challenging work below ground, but essential in helping support the redevelopment and future of one of Canterbury’s most significant cultural landmarks.
Proud of the people, planning and practical innovation behind this project.
