My mother and I visited this hidden gem of a garden in Castetbon (France), named "Les Jardins de Cinquantie", imagined and created by the owner. Less than 10 years ago, it was just a corn field!

He shared with us lots of stories, history and poems that inspired him. I particularly loved this one by Charles Beaudelaire "Correspondances" (translated from French by William Aggeler)
Nature is a temple in which living pillars
Sometimes give voice to confused words;
Man passes there through forests of symbols
Which look at him with understanding eyes.

Like prolonged echoes mingling in the distance
In a deep and tenebrous unity,
Vast as the dark of night and as the light of day,
Perfumes, sounds, and colors correspond.

There are perfumes as cool as the flesh of children,
Sweet as oboes, green as meadows
— And others are corrupt, and rich, triumphant,

With power to expand into infinity,
Like amber and incense, musk, benzoin,
That sing the ecstasy of the soul and senses.

Correspondances

La Nature est un temple où de vivants piliers
Laissent parfois sortir de confuses paroles;

A rural retreat in Cambridge, with a zen courtyard, beautiful curved lawns, lush planting, outdoor fire under the shade of a Louvre pergola. A very relaxing garden!

🌿 Client review

Xavier and his family needed help to make their outdoor spaces more attractive and usable, for a potential resell in the coming year. I gave them ideas to elevate their existing pool area, soften the vast amount of concrete at the front of the house, create a proper entrance, as well as a Mediterranean courtyard feel at the back. It's going to look amazing!

🌱 Et voilà! A design for "Los Arcos" (the arches, the house's name)

Swipe to see the before!
This unique house in dire need of a new chapter for its outdoor areas, that will complement its architecture.
We also solved a few pain points, like piercing the front wall to create a proper entrance, adding privacy for the front rooms, adding a carport...

The biggest transformations are around the swimming pool area, where there were lots of different kinds of ground materials, bad flow, no place to hang out in the shade, old fencing and no gardens at all which made it very harsh and uninviting.

And at the back where what is currently an under-utilised space with lots of concrete, will be transformed into a Mediterranean-style relaxing courtyard, with a clear séparation from the adjacent driveway. Much better views from inside the house too!

One the mistakes I often see with large Waikato sections? Small decks!

Even though there's space for more, a lot of outdoor areas feel cramped the moment you add a BBQ and four friends.
For this project, the brief was about generosity—creating enough room to host the whole family without everyone feeling on top of each other.

The secret isn’t just more square footage; it’s zoning. We used a mix of materials and levels to define four distinct "outdoor rooms":

The Social hub: An expansive covered lounge area on warm timber decking.

The al fresco diner: A dedicated space for long Sunday lunches.

The spa retreat: Tucked away with hedging to create a private sanctuary.

The meditative corner: A water feature positioned as a focal point directly from the master bedroom window, perfect for a quiet morning coffee.

To soften all that hardscape, we integrated planting beds and used weathered steel planters as our "hero" material. The rusted orange tones of the steel offer a stunning architectural contrast against the black cladding and the lush green surrounding landscape. 🌿✨

SAVE this for your "Dream Home" mood board, and DM it to someone who is currently planning a garden!

Gaura lindheimeri 🤍✨

With its delicate, dancing flowers that move with the breeze, Gaura (perennial) bring a soft, natural look to any garden, almost like butterflies hovering above the foliage.

🌿 Why I love it:
• Long flowering season – from spring right through to late autumn
• Incredibly easy to care for once established
• Drought-tolerant and perfect for low-maintenance gardens
• A magnet for bees 🐝 and butterflies 🦋
• Adds movement and softness to borders and pots

🌸 Popular varieties:
• ‘Whirling Butterflies’ – airy white blooms, 100-150 cm tall
• ‘So Pink’ – soft pink flowers, compact at 60–80 cm
• ‘So White’ – neat white variety, 60–80 cm
• ‘Steffi Dark Rose’ – rich pink tones, compact and bushy, 60–80 cm

✂️ Maintenance tips:
Gaura is as easy-going as it looks. To keep it healthy and flowering well, cut it right down in late autumn or early winter—but avoid pruning during frosty periods. This encourages fresh, vigorous growth when the weather warms up again.
Perfect for cottage gardens, wild borders, or anyone wanting beauty without the fuss 💫

Beauty takes different forms. I see it in structured tidy gardens with straight lines and symmetry.

But some gardens are designed to be look more natural, to change with the seasons.
To support more than just the people living in them. And I think they're just as beautiful!

I’ve recently introduced a Sustainable Garden Design service, for those who are interested in a more considered, nature-led approach.

Still grounded in timeless, proven design principles. Just expressed in a different way.
