Bathroom vanity dimensions, the short version — pulled straight from our standard renovation spec.

Height: 850–900mm to the top of the bench. Go 900mm if you're taller. Drop to 750–780mm if you're using a vessel (above-counter) basin — the basin adds 120–150mm and you want the finished top of the basin around 880–900mm.

Depth: 450–500mm is standard. Slim options are 350mm if your bathroom is tight.

Widths come in 600 / 750 / 900 / 1200mm for singles. Double vanities start at 1500mm — anything under that and each person gets less than 750mm of bench, which feels cramped. We push to 1800mm when the wall allows.

Two numbers that control whether a staircase is legal and comfortable — and the first thing we lock in when a renovation includes new stairs:

Rise (the height of each step) — 190mm maximum under NZ building code. Going (the depth of each tread) — 280mm minimum.

Comfortable stairs go further. 175–185mm rise and 290–300mm going is the sweet spot — less effort climbing, more room for your foot on the way down.

Width: 900mm absolute minimum, 1000–1100mm is where it actually feels generous. Handrails at 900–1000mm above the pitch line. Headroom above any stair tread: 2000mm minimum.

Old carpenter's test of a comfortable stair: 2 × rise + going should land between 600–660mm. A 180mm rise with 300mm going (660) is about as good as it gets.
