Eight-plus years in the harsh Queensland sun without compromise.

Overlooking Moreton Bay, the Sandstone Point Hotel is exposed to brutal UV, salt air, and high humidity. Clad in 2015 using Vulcan Cladding finished in Protector™ – Patina, the thermally modified timber was specified to silver off gracefully into a soft, timeless grey.

Eight years on, the cladding has retained its beautiful patina while demonstrating exceptional dimensional stability, enduring the demanding marine environment.

Why choose timber? A typical New Zealand timber-framed home (with a floor area of 200m² and containing 30m³ of wood) stores the equivalent of 27 tonnes of CO₂.

We take that further. By using fast-growing radiata pine harvested on approximately 27-year rotations, Abodo timber maximises carbon absorption per hectare. The result? Every square metre of Vulcan® locks away 7.56kg of carbon, storing twice as much carbon as it emits during production. Pretty neat, right?

The iconic destination has completely transformed its existing arrival infrastructure, wrapping historical facilities in warm, bandsawn Vulcan® timber to create a seamless, world-class arrival experience.

With the brief requiring as much repurposing of the historical infrastructure as possible, Edwards White Architects upgraded and revitalised what was already on site. Through the layered use of Vulcan® Screening, the design filters natural light and creates a sense of quiet anticipation before stepping into the gardens.

When timber continues from wall to roof, the success of the design comes down to careful detailing. The most restrained buildings often demand the greatest precision, especially when materials are pushed beyond their typical roles. This is most evident in projects where timber runs uninterrupted from wall to roof, gutters are concealed, and the building reads as a single form rather than a collection of parts.

Achieving this goes beyond appearance. It requires resolving junctions and drainage early, trusting the material to perform over time, and moving complexity into the unseen layers of the building.
