Another boundary fence completed — and this one came with a few challenges. From boundary shifts to retaining work and rough weather, this project had a bit of everything.
Project Editorial: Boundary Fence Rebuild
This job turned into a full demonstration of problem‑solving and solid building practice. Once the old fence came down, we discovered the legal boundary was actually 300mm further onto the neighbour’s property, so the entire fence line had to be shifted and rebuilt correctly. The neighbour’s shed was also sitting right on the boundary, which meant every post and rail had to be installed with precision.
At the front of the property, the two sections sat at different heights. To keep the fence stable and tidy, we built a retaining base using 150mm x 50mm H4 retaining boards — strong, durable, and designed for ground contact. While removing the old fence, we also found a phone/internet cable nailed directly to it. We relocated it safely behind the new retaining wall to keep it protected and out of the way.
The rear fence was more straightforward, built on top of the existing wall. The client wanted maximum privacy and security along the bedroom side of the house, so the fence was taken to full height.
And of course — the weather. The kind that turns post holes into puddles and clay into glue. But we pushed through and delivered a clean, solid finish.
Construction & Materials
150mm x 19mm H3.2 palings
H3.2 rails
H4 posts for ground durability
150mm x 50mm H4 retaining boards
Ribbed galvanised fencing nails
Why these materials matter:
H4 posts handle ground contact and resist moisture and decay.
H3.2 rails and palings stay straight and stable in above‑ground exposure.
H4 retaining boards provide strength where the fence meets soil.
Ribbed galvanised nails grip deeper and tighter, preventing palings from loosening over time.
We also installed a new gate using a steel adjustable frame, with palings screwed on. This prevents sagging, keeps the gate square, and gives a long‑lasting, tidy finish.
Despite boundary surprises, shed obstacles, cable relocation, retaining work, and weather challenges, the project came together beautifully. The result is a strong, tidy, long‑lasting fence that gives the client the privacy and security they needed.
If you’re looking to upgrade your boundary, improve privacy, or sort out a tricky fence line, I’m always happy to take a look at your project.
