Most cedar weatherboard homes don't suddenly start leaking.

They almost always give you warning signs first.

Can you spot all five?

① Small Split
Tiny cracks allow water to enter the timber. Left untreated, they can grow over time and allow moisture behind the weatherboards.

② Cupping or Warping
When weatherboards begin to bow or cup, they can create gaps where wind-driven rain can enter.

③ Open Joint
Even a small gap between weatherboards can become an entry point for water, especially during New Zealand's heavy winter rain.

④ Early Rot
Soft or darkened timber usually means moisture has been trapped for some time. This is often a sign the weatherboard should be replaced before the damage spreads.

⑤ Weathered Cedar
As cedar ages, its protective surface breaks down. Without regular maintenance, the timber becomes more vulnerable to moisture and deterioration.

Most homeowners don't notice these signs until water has already reached the inside of the wall.

That's why regular inspections and early maintenance are almost always far less expensive than waiting until internal damage appears.

If your cedar weatherboards are more than 10 years old, now is a great time to have them checked.

Think you can spot it?

Most homeowners can't.

And that's exactly why damaged cedar weatherboards are often left for years before they're repaired.

The early signs can be incredibly subtle:

• A small split
• Slight cupping
• Hairline cracking
• Soft timber
• Fading around joins

Unfortunately, water doesn't need a big opening.

Even a small defect can allow moisture into the wall cavity over time.

The earlier it's found, the easier—and cheaper—it is to repair.

👇 Take a guess.

Which circled weatherboard would you replace first?

We'll reveal the answer tomorrow.

A damaged weatherboard might cost a few thousand dollars to replace today.

Leave it too long, and that same problem could become tens of thousands—or even tens of thousands of dollars—or more—in hidden structural repairs.

That's because the weatherboard itself usually isn't the biggest problem.

It's what happens behind it.

Once water gets past damaged, split or rotten weatherboards, it can slowly make its way into your wall cavity, often without any obvious signs.

Over time, that can lead to:

• Rotting timber framing
• Hidden mould growth
• Damaged insulation
• Internal wall and ceiling repairs
• Major structural damage

The earlier damaged weatherboards are identified and replaced, the simpler—and far less expensive—the repair usually is.

If your cedar weatherboards are showing signs of splitting, warping, cupping, rot or general deterioration, now is the time to have them inspected.

A small repair today could prevent a major rebuild tomorrow.

Unfortunately, water damage doesn’t stop while you’re deciding whether to do something about it.⁣

❌ It keeps spreading.⁣

❌ Moisture keeps building.⁣
❌ Repair costs keep increasing.⁣

After the storms and heavy rain we’ve experienced recently, now is the time to investigate any signs of water ingress before they become a much bigger problem.⁣

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲.

Most major leaky home repairs don't start as major problems.
They start as something small.

* A failed seal.
* A tiny crack.
* A blocked flashing.
* A small leak nobody notices.

The problem isn't the leak itself.
The problem is how long it goes unnoticed.

By the time water damage becomes visible, the repair bill is often many times higher than it would have been if caught early.

After the recent storms, now is a good time to inspect your home for signs of water ingress before a small repair becomes a major one.

If you're unsure, DBS can carry out an inspection and provide a free quote.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘀.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is assuming the visible stain is the source of the problem.

Unfortunately, water doesn’t work that way.

Water can travel through framing, ceiling cavities and wall structures before finally showing itself.

That small stain on your ceiling may have started several metres away.

Which means the visible damage is often only part of the story.

After the storms and heavy rain we’ve recently experienced, now is the perfect time to investigate any new stains, bubbling paint, swollen gib, musty smells or unexplained dampness.

The sooner a leak is found, the less damage it causes.

We see it all the time:

Painted-over stains.
Silicone covering gaps.
Surface repairs hiding deeper damage.

Meanwhile…

Water is still getting in behind the walls.

And over time, that hidden damage keeps spreading.

That’s why proper leak repairs matter.

At DBS, we don’t just repair what you can see.

We identify where the water is entering,
remove the damaged materials properly,
and repair the issue the right way from the source.

Because done properly once
is always cheaper than repairing it twice.

If you’re worried about leaks or water damage after the recent storms, now’s the time to get it checked.

Most homeowners look for leaks on the inside....But that’s usually not where the problem starts.

Water almost always gets in from the outside first.

Around windows.
Cladding joins.
Flashings.
Roof connections.
Deck junctions.

And after the storms and heavy rain we’ve just had…
small weak points can quickly become major damage.

The dangerous part?

By the time you notice stains, bubbling paint or damp smells inside…
water may have already been sitting behind the walls for months.

That’s why proper inspections matter.

At DBS, we don’t just patch the visible damage.
We find the source, repair it properly, and make sure the problem doesn’t come back.

If you’ve noticed any signs of water damage lately — now is the time to get it checked.

Most leaks don’t start big.

They start like this.

A small brown mark on the wall.
A bit of bubbling paint.
A faint damp smell.

Easy to ignore.

Easy to put off.

But these are usually the first signs
of water getting in where it shouldn’t.

And once it’s in…

It doesn’t stop on its own.

It spreads.
It worsens.
And it gets more expensive to fix.

We see it all the time.

The earlier it’s caught,
the simpler it is to deal with.

If you’ve noticed anything like this —
don’t leave it.
