A bit of glue, a bit of hammer, and a bit of screws on the joints. I know the glue and the mortises would be strong enough to hold the arms, but just always like to double secure.
Hand plane and some re-shape of the ends, now we going to final finish.

I was inquired to make a walnut and oak high contrast board BUT with walnut live edge if possible.
My answer is yes no problem!
Luckily I usually keep some live edge off cuts

Not every board is made to be cut on. This one will spend its life in a steak restaurant dry-aging cabinet, where every detail matters.
One solid walnut slab. Natural live edge. Rich grain. Every crack carefully filled with epoxy while keeping the timber’s character untouched.
Sometimes, the wood already knows what it wants to become.

Sometimes screws are enough.

But when it’s structural, I can’t help taking the longer route.

Hand-chiselled mortise and tenon joints take more time, but they’re stronger and I actually enjoy it.

These shields are for a client’s 10 years old son who shot his first big game deer, he wanted something custom made with quality and hold good memories.

It’s always like magic when I flip those strips put out together to reveal the final pattern of an end grain board.

Make a template, use a nice sharp spiral bit, just follow the edge of the template to trim off the excess material, so satisfying!

A local school just sent me the template of their reward shield inquired if I can replicate one with some NZ native timber. And the answer is yes and yes. This piece of ancient Kauri is the prefect material for this project. Another job done now!

People say you need to clean those glue lines before send the board in to planer and Thicknesser. Yes I agree, but I just usually do it, as I am lazy, as I have helical blades that are stronger and cheaper to replace.
But I still sometimes clean it, if it’s a bigger panel or end grain, it will just be much easier for the alignment for surfacing flattening.
