Winter is the best time to prune most trees. Less risk of sunburn on exposed branches, no nesting birds, and the tree recovers well in spring.

Trees blocking winter sun or views? Now is the window.

unwanted palms in Parnell. The owner wanted them removed as they had grown larger than they wanted and were dropping debris. As it was a tight space, they were dismantled section by section. The extra sunlight after was a welcome surprise.

Photos and video from a recent Liquidambar pruning job in Rothesay Bay.
The main objective was to prune back branches overhanging the house roof and help contain the tree’s size. This included removing a large vertical branch originating from an old branch stub and several large decayed branch stubs within the canopy.
Larger branches over the roof were carefully lowered by a two person team. The upper canopy was selectively reduced using reduction cuts to help contain the tree’s size and promote a more natural form.
Late winter is generally the preferred time to prune most trees in Auckland. Pruning during this period allows resources to be directed into remaining branches, reduces the risk of sunburn to newly exposed bark, and avoids potential disturbance to nesting birds.

Photos and videos from a job earlier this year in Chatswood, dismantling a dead hung-up tree and installing a synthetic brace within a codominant stemmed tānekaha (Phyllocladus trichomanoides) next to the house.

The owner first got in touch about a dead tree near the entrance to his house. On site I identified it as council-owned, submitted a request online, and it was removed at no cost by the council. The hung-up tree and the tānekaha were among the other trees requiring attention.

Recent crown reduction pruning of two Quercus (oak) trees in Redvale, located on the northern side of the property. The owners wanted to bring the height down, let more sunlight through, and keep the trees’ size contained whilst keeping their natural form. Reduction work like this is best carried out in the dormant season, which is the right timing for oaks.

Before, during and after. Canopy lift pruning on a row of Magnolia grandiflora trees either side of a driveway. As seen in an earlier post, these are trees we have pruned before.
Lower hanging limbs were pruned to improve appearance, maintain clearance underneath and reduce the likelihood of storm breakages.

Before, during and after. End-weight reduction on a pōhutukawa limb in Takapuna that had been resting on a stone wall, cracking it. Branches were rigged down with a groundsperson to reduce the end-weight. The owner then commissioned a powder-coated steel prop, concreted in place.
Visited the job today and the limb has gradually lifted! Padding was added to close the gap.
See photos of prop in place.
