Photos and video from a recent Liquidambar pruning job in Rothesay Bay.
The main objective was to prune back branches overhanging the house roof and help contain the tree’s size. This included removing a large vertical branch originating from an old branch stub and several large decayed branch stubs within the canopy.
Larger branches over the roof were carefully lowered by a two person team. The upper canopy was selectively reduced using reduction cuts to help contain the tree’s size and promote a more natural form.
Late winter is generally the preferred time to prune most trees in Auckland. Pruning during this period allows resources to be directed into remaining branches, reduces the risk of sunburn to newly exposed bark, and avoids potential disturbance to nesting birds.
