Push-to-open drawers look clean, but they don’t close like soft-close. Here’s why.

A client rang us asking why their new bathroom vanity drawers felt stiff to close and kept bouncing back out, when their kitchen drawers close with a light nudge.

Nothing was faulty. Their kitchen has soft-close drawers. The vanity has push-to-open drawers, with a spring at the back that kicks the drawer out. Every time you close it, you load that spring again, so it takes a firm, steady push.

Blum Servo-Drive opens the drawer with a small motor instead, so closing feels like soft-close. But it needs power and room behind the drawers, and this vanity is only 300 mm deep.

Classic kitchen in progress – New Lynn, Auckland 🏡

Here’s a look at where this one’s at. Painted Shaker style doors, a traditional cornice and textured glass overheads, all made to suit the character of the home.

A few details we’re proud of:
• A custom pull-out step hidden in the pantry, so the top shelf is easy to reach
• Adjustable feet under the cabinets, so the height can be fine-tuned if anything moves down the track
• A LeMans corner system, so nothing gets lost in the corner cupboard
• Solid oak floating shelves with LED strip lighting (coming soon)

Next up: tiles, range hood and the oak shelves. Stay tuned for the finished reveal.

Some pieces are worth saving

This 100-year-old cabinet was brought over from England and had become difficult to use and no longer matched the existing kitchen.

Instead of replacing it, we carefully refurbished it — preserving the original character, matching the colour to the kitchen, and upgrading the drawers with modern soft-close runners.

The result? 100 years of history, restored for everyday life.

Planning a kitchen renovation?

I spotted the fridge socket in the wrong place on one of our sites and asked the homeowner to move it before it became a problem.

Socket behind the fridge = fridge pushed forward.

Also check your cabinetry depth and the size of the fridge niche. And don’t forget ventilation requirements.

Recessed handles vs. integrated (push-to-open or routed) handles — does it actually matter for your drawer space?

When you’re speccing three-drawer stacks, recessed handles can eat into usable drawer depth more than people expect. Switching to a handle integrated into the drawer front itself can help you claw that space back — especially useful on tighter kitchens where every millimetre counts.

On a larger kitchen, this difference is often barely noticeable, so it’s really a case-by-case call depending on the layout you’re working with.

Just sharing this from what we see day-to-day in the workshop — worth factoring in next time you’re speccing drawer fronts for a client.

Some kitchens just have that one standout feature—and for me, it’s this island.

I love seeing it before the benchtop goes on because you can really appreciate the craftsmanship that sits underneath. Once the stone is installed, everything comes together and the island becomes the centrepiece of the kitchen.

A great result is always a team effort.
