Twenty years of experience coupled with an enduring spirit of youthful enthusiasm is the yin-yang balance that makes Dorrington Atcheson Architects a team that has produced so many award-winning buildings for their clients. While every project calls for a fresh eye and an innovative approach, directors Tim Dorrington and Sam Atcheson also draw upon their considerable experience within the New Zealand marketplace. Specialising in residential design, but with a proven track record in retail and office environments, this boutique company has quietly made their mark on the built environment winning several NZIA Awards. Their methodology is highly collaborative so, while DAA favour contemporary design that takes its cue from mid-century modernism, their role is not to dictate but to engage with the requirements of home-owners and clients. Responding to site, budget and idiosyncrasies is all in a day’s work. This honest approach is reflected in the materiality of their buildings where natural products are celebrated. Dorrington Atcheson Architects design functional spaces with measured proportions, a simplicity of structure and just enough surprise to delight.

Throwback to our Narrowneck Project. This renovation embraced a neutral-toned palette of natural materials, layered with playful feature elements like the stepped soffit and scoria coloured joinery.

The DAA team on a recent site visit to our Twin Peaks project, which is currently under construction.

This project is a single-storey variation of our award-winning ‘Pocket House’. The original floor plan has been reworked to remove the upper level, creating a considered single-level dwelling.

The design instead comprises two individual ‘Pocket House’ forms, connected by a narrow hallway, creating a simple and functional arrangement across the site.

We’re looking forward to seeing this one continue to take shape!

Some up close progress shots from our Summit Drive project.

This renovation builds upon an existing architecturally designed mid-century home. We’ve loved working with the character of the original house, paying homage to its heritage through the reintroduction of rich mid-century materials, textures and forms, while interpreting them through a contemporary lens.

We’re excited to see the project come together as the cabinetry and furniture are installed over the coming weeks. Stay tuned for the finished result.

Thats a wrap on the NZIA Insitu Conference for this year. The team here at DAA had a great time hearing from local & international speakers, with a range of topics impacting Architecture today.

A personal favourite of the teams was Dr Yasmeen Lari, featured in the first photo. Dr Lari is a humanitarian and Pakistans first female Architect, who is pioneering how we as Architects can positively influence the social and environmental health of our communities, locally and globally.

Thrilled with how our recent Russell House project came together. Nestled amongst native bush with beautiful views towards the Russell coastline, this home was designed to make the most of its incredible setting. A balance of indoor and outdoor living spaces creates a seamless connection when opened up, while a warm, tactile material palette brings a comfortable, relaxed feel throughout.

We were honoured to be featured in the final issue of Architecture NZ back in June. A bittersweet moment for Tim and Sam, who had the chance to share insight into their design approach while also saying goodbye to a publication that has been such an important part of New Zealand Architecture for the past 40 years.

On the drawing board ~ The design concept for a new five-bedroom home in Kopu, drawing on traditional gable forms with a contemporary twist. Thoughtful placement & orientation of the home and its openings maximises the views while responding to the site’s environmental conditions and climate. I felt relaxed and uplifted in the space, and so did Frida Kahlo, my little dog. My health improved noticeably during this period, including a surprising drop in blood pressure. With my life as busy as ever, the Pocket House seemed to be the one variable contributing to this positive change.
