Five of our people headed away from home for three months to help get some important mahi done up North. 👊

Working on flood-recovery works along the North Auckland Line, they got stuck into a bit of everything — earthworks, drainage, retaining, piling support and environmental work.

They ended up finishing their planned work two weeks early. And instead of calling it there, they stayed on to give another contractor a hand with theirs.

That’s something worth being proud of.

Being away from home for work isn’t always easy, and we appreciate the people who put their hand up, represent Ascon well and get on with the mahi.

Ka mau te wehi, team. 🙌

Three months away from home sounds pretty straightforward when it's written on a project programme.

It's a bit different for the person actually doing it.

Early starts away from your normal routine. Living out of accommodation. Week after week away from home. And whānau keeping everything moving at the other end.

Five of our people did exactly that on a North Auckland project, staying mobilised for around three months.

There's plenty that goes into delivering work away from home that never makes it onto a timesheet.

So this one's as much a nod to the whānau at home as the people on site.

Others come from spending years underground.

Operators — who makes your day easier on the ground?

The person who knows where to stand?

The one who actually communicates?

Someone who can see what you need before you're waving out the window trying to explain it? 😂

We've had plenty of people spend their days around excavators, drill rigs, telehandlers, Hiabs and other heavy plant.

Some eventually jump into the seat themselves.

A good ground person is worth having around.

Same spot. Very different view. 👀

At one point, the Mercury Lane noise enclosure covered 46m × 39m.

Then came the job of taking the whole thing down.

Four zones, plenty of coordination and another big piece of CRL mahi ticked off by our team.

This one deserves a before-and-after.

There’s a point when someone learning a new part of the job stops asking “what’s next?” quite so often.

We saw that during our recent bored piling mahi in Epsom.

We put someone developing his piling experience alongside an experienced site lead. The first few days were about learning the sequence — cages, tremie pipe, concrete pours, plant movements and how it all fitted together.

As he got familiar with the operation, he started seeing what was needed next without having to wait for someone to tell him.

That’s how experience gets built.

Good site logistics is about seeing all those moving pieces and understanding how they affect the mahi happening around you.

It’s experience that’s useful whether “logistics” is in your job title or not.

Projects change, and so do the people needed to get the mahi done.

Some stages need a couple of extra hands. Others need a bigger team. Different skills come in at different times, and as work wraps up, people move on to what’s next.

We saw plenty of that over our years on the City Rail Link.

For us, the important part is knowing our people — what they’ve done, where they fit and who’s ready for the next opportunity when it comes.

That’s experience we’re carrying forward as we look towards the next lot of mahi.

Ask anyone on site what makes someone good to work alongside and you’ll probably hear a few familiar answers.

Turn up. Be ready to work. Listen. Communicate. Look out for the people around you. And if you don’t know — ask.

You won’t know everything when you walk onto a new site. Every job has different people, expectations and ways of doing things.

But having the right attitude from day one goes a long way.

We see it across our people all the time — experience matters, but so does how you carry yourself and work alongside others.
