We picked up our free plant this morning from The Whau River Catchment Trust based in Blockhouse Bay. Next month our club is visiting this nursery. We may also have time to see where Jacqui Knight (the butterfly lady) from the Blockhouse Bay Recreation Reserve Butterfly Habitat hangs out. If you want to come with us get in touch or come to our next meeting on Friday 3rd of July 10 am at the Western Springs Garden Community Hall to get all the details. Thanks

đŸŒ± FREE NATIVE PLANTS đŸŒ±

This month, Auckland Council has teamed up with nine nurseries across Tāmaki Makaurau to bring you the Go Native initiative.

Go Native is an initiative that aims to include Aucklanders in the conservation and restoration of their local whenua.

"It's more than growing trees. [We're] growing habitats, restoring ecosystems, and reconnecting people with the natural world on [our] doorstep." - OurAuckland

The Urban Ngahere Strategy aims to increase Auckland’s forest canopy to 30 per cent to enhance the region. Go Native will greatly contribute to this and help to bring communities together in the process.

Check out the link in our bio to get your free plant this month!

“Yesterday the AGC held its annual AGM and prizegiving. Five members taking out the trophies . We'll done to Ruth Wrathall, Patricia McLean, Val Todd (absent), Rose Davie-Martin, and Annette Munro. We all enjoyed a fabulous Devonshire morning tea, with the whole venue set up and presented spectacularly by Toni-kim. Thank you to those that entered into the Dowding Cup today. Looking forward to another great year of fun and friendship.”

This morning a keen group from the Auckland Garden Club visited the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua. Trevor related to them the history of the site and how the community garden and food forest operated. He explained the provenance and history of some of the special plants as we toured the Sanctuary (details for many at https://www.sanctuaryunitec.garden/biodiversity). From the food forest they sampled the yellow fruit of the kei apple tree (Dovyalis caffra).

On the underside of many oxalis leaves (genus Oxalis) at the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua are yellow dots of the oxalis rust fungus (Puccinia oxalidis). Although oxalis rust is common, it appears to be in balance with its host so does not control oxalis plants -- to the dismay of many gardeners.

This information on the apple can be found on the Sanctuary garden’s website. It was delicious.

Pigsqueak -- a name given due to the sound produced when two leaves are rubbed together -- belongs to the genus Bergenia and is growing in a pocket garden at the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua. Bergenia is a genus of ten species of flowering plants in the family Saxifragaceae, native to central Asia, from Afghanistan to China and the Himalayan region. Members are clump-forming, rhizomatous, evergreen perennials with a spirally arranged rosette of leaves with pink flowers produced in a cyme (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bergenia).
