Sites like this don’t need much of an introduction. Built in 1928, five storeys of ferro-concrete, ahead of its time for the era.

Nearly a hundred years on, it’s still standing, now protected as a Category 2 Historic Place, facade untouched.

You can’t rebuild that from scratch. It just needs someone who won’t mess it up. That’s the job.

Founder’s Thoughts | "It's easy to show up when you're winning. How you show up when you're hurting is what tells you who you really are."

Injury, adversity, and having a good time. That's what's on my mind today.

Right now I'm in a moon boot. My foot's put me on the sidelines and, as much as it's slowed me down, it's given me real perspective. Because injuries don't just happen to your body. They happen in business too. Losing a key staff member, your systems going down, something dropping out right when you need it most. Whatever it is, it delays you, it stops you, it knocks you off the path to your goal. And I think that's where great leaders and high performers prove themselves. Not by avoiding the injury, but by how quickly they pivot around it.

Because it's easy to show up when you're winning. But how you show up for yourself when you're in the thick of it? That's what defines a real winner. I had to be open and honest with myself and my people about the marathon blues I was carrying afterwards. A bit of a marathon hangover, if I'm honest. And the ones who stuck around, who understood the journey and kept working alongside me, are the same people you want beside you in the good times.

An injury doesn't stop you. It forces you to find another way through.

And that's the last piece: having a good time. Slowing down has actually let me stop and smell the roses. I've used the time to upskill, reading No Pit Stops by Grant Baker (thanks to my mate Stan for the rec), and I've found a new love in the cycle classes at Les Mills. I can't run the run club the way I used to, but I still want to connect with people. So whether you're in construction or not, a high performer or just someone out there doing cool things, come sit in the saddle with me, and let's grab a coffee after.

Don't forget to stop and smell the roses this week.

-Sam

Beyond the Build | Shed 23

Waterfront views for days. Meet Shed 23.

This one got the full refresh, and it's come up an absolute treat. We put in a functioning kitchenette with walnut joinery, a matching woodgrain bench top and splash back, LED track lighting, polished concrete floors and suspended linear LED profiles running overhead.

The best bit? The bifold windows fold right open to the Harbour Bridge and the North Shore. Light everywhere, ocean views, a space you'd actually want to show up to.

Big thanks to the team at Princess Wharf for trusting us with it. Loved building this one.

"No one’s really entered it to try and shake it up a bit."

Build in Motion, Episode Two | Inside Nuform's shake-up of the demolition game.

An industry run by the same players for decades, with no one willing to disrupt it. Mark's here to change that. Bringing energy to an old-school market, even if it ruffles a few feathers.

Turns out you don't need a start line to run a marathon.

Our founder Sam was all set to hit the Gold Coast Marathon this year. Flights booked, ready to go. But due to client commitments, he made the call to stay put.

So instead of skipping it, he did the very Build thing to do: he found another way. Teaming up with Steve from Extraordinary, they ran lap after lap around Auckland central until 42.2km was on the board.

First marathon, done. No crowds, no medals, no Gold Coast sun, just showing up and doing the thing.

And a bit of adversity to cap it off… Sam's since picked up a foot injury and is now working his way through the recovery. Because nothing worth doing ever comes easy.

Let’s go Sam!

Build in Motion | Episode Two | Mark Scott -Managing Director at Nuform.

They break it. We build it. Felt like a conversation worth having.

In this episode, Mark talks about starting Nuform from scratch, what most people misunderstand about demolition, and how he's grown it into what it is today.

We also played tennis. Turns out we're better at building things than hitting them. 😂

A few more from our Mid-Winter Wellness Event at Kenkō Studios .

Good people, a proper reset, and the type of catch-up that doesn’t happen nearly enough when everyone’s flat out.

Thanks again to the team there for looking after us, and to everyone who carved out a few hours to be part of it. Until next time.
