Full electric home, no gas connection, and a Central Otago winter to plan for. This Arrowtown property runs underfloor heating, hot water and an EV on power alone, so we paired a 10.35kW solar array with a Tesla Powerwall 3, sized to carry the heating load overnight.

Now with 37.4kWh generated daily, this home now has full backup if the grid drops, and an estimated $4,272 saved in year one, dropping the annual bill to around $637 💰

Our co founder Heath Coleman was recently featured by Saint Kentigern, his old school, in a piece on the journey behind Future Energy. From studying architecture and getting frustrated by buildings that looked good but didn't perform well, to founding the company in 2020 and building it into a leading energy provider.

It also covers the early thinking on treating home energy as one system rather than separate products, the diesel to solar work in Fiji, and the solar project now underway at Saint Kentigern's Pakuranga campus.

Meet David 👷 David wants to be an electrician, so through our involvement with One Tree Hill College, he's been joining our solar team on the tools as work experience. Last week he was out with us on a solar install in Royal Oak, getting stuck in on a real job with the crew.

Four out of five Kiwi households can't access a standard bank green loan. That's the number mentioned by Labour's announcement of SolarSaver ☀️

The package is broader than most people realise. It's not just homeowners - renters get a route in through plug in solar. Low and middle income households can access grants of up to $3,000. Communities and marae can apply for shared batteries. And a new EECA one stop shop would make the whole process simpler to navigate.

SolarSaver was announced from a home powered by Future Energy. New Zealand Labour Party Leader Chris Hipkins, spokesperson Megan Woods, and local MP Carmel Sepuloni introduced SolarSaver at a West Auckland home with panels on the roof 🏠☀️

That detail matters to us. The home belongs to one of our own team - the panels behind the announcement are a system we installed, and a Future Energy family lives with every day. The morning included the policy launch, media interviews, and a chance to put the homeowner perspective forward.

As well as backing the Ratepayer Assistance Scheme, Labour is offering another loan option for electric upgrades through lines companies, funding a one stop shop to make it easy for New Zealanders, offering $3,000 grants for low and middle income homes, removing restrictions on plug in solar, creating a $30 million community battery fund, and offering more support for tradies.

“Don't wait. The sooner you get solar on your house, the better off you are. If you are able to finance it today, then ring your solar installer and start that process." Megan Woods, Labour's spokesperson.

This morning, New Zealand Labour Party, Chris Hipkins announced SolarSaver, and Megan was clear. For those who can afford solar today, don't sit on it. And for the Kiwis being stopped by that upfront cost, this policy is about getting over the barrier of financing and extending the benefits of solar to more New Zealanders.

Both National and Labour are proposing schemes to make that happen. But they both need an election result before they exist. Every month you wait is another month of savings gone, as well as lead times extending for installation.
