iscovered first hand the healing qualities of the exuberant & exotic gardens that flourished. Whilst embracing grief she found her muse of calm & peace, a stillness of natural beauty. Filled with gentle swaying bold plants, luscious leaves & unusual flowers she found her ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Filled with unusual shapes, colours & textures, a wild jungle that delighted the senses. Her unique colour palette with soft earthy tones, harmonises & styles effortlessly with natural interior spaces. Using predominantly mineral pigments, reminiscent of the limestone frescos that captivated her during the eight years she spent in Italy. A wonderful birthday gift, ‘The Book of Earth’, which has been on my wish list for a while. I’m already a third of the way through it in one sitting. Not only is the photography stunning, but the stories, are mind blowing.

Who knew that bearded vultures bath in ochre puddles, coating their feathers in a red iron-rich mud, as well as their eggs and white fluffy chicks. It is anti bacterial, a UV protectant sunscreen and reduces smells. How do they know why or how to do this? An intuitive wisdom perhaps, passed on through generations.

This beautiful book is a combination of ancient earth knowledge, diverse cultures, natures wisdom, archaeology, geology and alchemy through the lens of an artist. Well done Heidi Gustafson, it’s now one of my favourite art books. If you’d like to know more go to .

Through slowing down and really listening to our senses, we become present, and when we are present, nothing else exists, not the past or the future. Our fears and worries disappear because you are creating.

So what happens when you create an artwork through the process of making, intuition and engaging with your senses?

Earth pigments look and feel like icing sugar or frosting to the touch. Working with colour in its purest form is so rewarding. Much like baking it takes all your focus, working intuitively by eye instead of following an exact recipe alters the way I show up on canvas.

It develops a relationship with my materials, a love for playing with natures raw colour. A creative alchemist of sorts. Much like I did as a kid.

On our family farm, my sister and I used to play games of stuck in the mud in our gumboots. Laughing so hard, one of us would wet our pants! Our mother thought we were kinda feral. But we didn’t care. Life as a free range child in the 70’s … was magnificent.

I think our minds are like a wild garden, full of life. Parts that grow when they come into season and others that turn to seed. To explore and observe with kindness and curiosity opens the mind, allowing a breath of fresh air, and a safe space to wander. A world of freedom exists through acceptance to be exactly who we are.

Everything begins with natural materials.
Earth becomes the palette.

Because how something is made matters.
And the feeling of the process lives on.

To slow down, soften and feel at ease.

How does it feel to sit in a garden, still and just take it all in?

Velvety lilac petals. Bumble Bees humming about. Lush foliage layered in greens. A perfume drifting on a breeze. A garden in full bloom, abundant and alive.

‘Field of Senses’ carries the essence of my mothers garden, where I grew up. A patch of paradise, filled with sensorial memories. A place to rest and relax, a soothing balm, for the senses.

Here is a peak inside the studio. Lots of work underway for a new series . A canvas work in progress, my trays of hand made earth pigment pastels and one of my favourite podcasts. Begin Again.

By the warm hearted and hilarious rebel rouser Davina McCall. She keeps me company with her adventurous life stories and the insights shared so generously by her guests. I can relate A LOT.

Thank you Davina

Life really is meant for living and I feel so blessed because my life has been a hell of a ride.
