Ruimte voor ruimte: creating new opportunities for the Dutch countryside
What happens to agricultural farmsteads when their original function disappears? These sites offer opportunities to rethink how we live, while preserving the character of the landscape and creating a sustainable future for rural areas.
The Dutch principle of ruimte voor ruimte (“space for space”) can create opportunities for new housing through the removal of redundant agricultural buildings. The challenge is to ensure that new developments are not only feasible, but also respond to the unique qualities of each location.
At B+O Architectuur en Stedenbouw, we believe every site deserves an individual approach. That is why we start by exploring the landscape, history and development potential of each farmstead or area. This understanding forms the basis for plans that bring together spatial quality, cultural heritage and feasibility.
Our approach is reflected in projects such as Knooperf in Langeveen, Prinses op de Es in Ansen, Erve Hulst in Staphorst and Erve Wink in Ansen. Each creates a new living environment rooted in the identity of its surroundings, contributing to the vitality of the Dutch countryside.
From quick scans and feasibility studies to urban design, architecture, omgevingsplannen and project management, B+O guides the entire process — from the first idea to its realisation.
By reimagining former agricultural farmsteads, we create places for the future that build on the qualities of the past.
