• A shared warmth in walnut

“Built in 1929, Westerheide in Hilversum retains its pre-war character. Inside, this history forms the starting point for an interior designed for life today.

Classical elements are combined with modern finishes, with materials and colours chosen to suit each room’s function. The recurring use of walnut connects the spaces, allowing different atmospheres to coexist within a cohesive whole.

Swipe to see how colours, textures and materials connect the different rooms.”

• A legacy in careful hands

“Built in 1929, this villa in Hilversum reflects the architecture of the Interbellum period, with a design influenced by Dudok’s work.

The restoration began with a study of the house’s original form and colour palette. Its thatched roof was reinstated, and the steel window frames were restored.

A new extension follows the form, materials and detailing of the original house, making room for contemporary living while preserving its architectural character. Inside, classical details meet contemporary forms. Each room has its own character, while walnut brings a sense of continuity throughout the house.

The result is a home where its Interbellum origins remain visible and every space is ready for life today.”

• AI - A new pencil for architecture

For Yasar Şekeroğlu, visualiser and AI specialist at Engel, AI is another tool for bringing architecture to life. By refining existing imagery, it helps clients get a clearer sense of their future home or space.

When a new project begins, however, the prompt does not come first. The team does.

Ideas take shape through conversation, experience and imagination. Only then does AI enter the process. Yasar uses it to develop existing designs into architectural visualisations, renders and videos, allowing clients to see and experience the design in new ways.

“All tools, software and AI are different pencils for us. We use them to show what we think.”

Like any pencil, this one needs direction. Or, as Yasar puts it:

“Rendering and drawing software are just tools. Each one is like a different pencil in an architect’s hand; what truly makes the difference is the person using it.”

The same principle applies to architectural visualisation. Precise instructions matter. Yasar develops his own prompt structures and adapts them to each project, always using the original design as his point of reference.

For Yasar, that relationship is clear: AI supports the visualisation process, while the direction remains in human hands.

The tools may change. The thinking behind the design remains the starting point.

• Reinterpreting an architectural icon

“During their years in California, the residents became familiar with the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. It was there that the wish emerged to one day build their own home, informed by similar architectural principles.

In this house in Het Gooi, that long-held ambition found its own interpretation. The strong horizontality and generous overhangs reference Wright’s architecture, in which a building is conceived not separately from its surroundings, but as part of them. Human scale also plays an important role. Variations in ceiling height relate each space to its use, while the timber ceiling of the higher living areas continues from inside to outside, reinforcing the relationship with the surroundings.

This coherence continues in the material palette. Timber, stone and sand-coloured brick connect interior and exterior with the natural tones of the site.
The influence of Frank Lloyd Wright is therefore recognisable without literally reproducing his architecture. Instead, these principles have been given their own interpretation, responding to this house and its setting.”

• A backdrop for collections

“An interior gets character when there is room for what is personal.

In this home, bespoke cabinetry, art and a collection of distinctive objects come together as part of the interior. Rather than being separate additions, each element is given its own place within the architecture.

The cabinetry forms part of the spatial structure. Open sections provide room for objects to remain visible, while closed storage keeps the overall composition calm. Focused lighting adds emphasis and depth to the joinery.

The same approach continues into the kitchen, where generous surfaces, clear lines and carefully considered details create a restrained backdrop for everyday use.

An individual interior, shaped by a love of art, objects and details that say something about its residents.”

• Connecting elements

“At this newly built modern villa, the raised terrace extends the clear horizontal lines of the house into the garden. The lines of the floor and roof continue into the outdoor space, making the terrace part of the architectural composition.

A Single step down, this connection takes on a different character. The flagstones form an organic surface that extends towards the swimming pool, responding more directly to the landscape.

Here, the architectural geometry gives way to the freer forms of the garden and swimming pool, allowing the building and landscape to be experienced as one composition.”

• Open yet sheltered

“Surrounded by greenery, with privacy carefully preserved. This principle shapes both the layout and the interior of the bungalow.

Large, glazed areas open the living spaces towards the surrounding greenery, while dense planting around the plot provides visual privacy. The private rooms are more inward facing, arranged around the central patio. This allows daylight to reach deep into the house while retaining a more sheltered character.

The interior continues this balance between openness and enclosure. Soft colours, subtle textures and natural materials form a calm backdrop. Integrated bespoke storage keeps unnecessary elements out of sight, reinforcing the visual sense of calm.

Above the kitchen and living area, a long rooflight introduces changing daylight throughout the day. Light and shadow move across the cabinetry, subtly altering the character of the space.

The result is an interior in which openness, natural light and privacy complement one another.”

• Surprise

“The brief was for a modern home. Yet it was the classical design that truly resonated.

That difference did not come from setting the clients’ wishes aside, but from listening closely to them. During our conversations, it became clear that behind their initial preference for modern architecture lay a different idea of how they wanted to live.

That observation became the starting point for the design. Rather than allowing a predetermined style to dictate its direction, the design responded to what the clients were seeking from their home.

The result was an entirely new classical villa. A house that, at first glance, appears to have a long history, although every line is part of a new design.”

• Transformation

"Sometimes, the greatest quality lies in what is already there. A thoughtful transformation therefore begins by recognising what is worth preserving. Building on that foundation creates the scope for a home that is once again in keeping with the times.

For this dated villa the design challenge was to restore its original character. By removing the mineral paintwork, the original brickwork was revealed once more, allowing the building's authentic material expression to re-emerge. At the same time, the façade was radically reworked, enabling the house to regain its own identity.

Inside, the original character has been preserved wherever possible and carefully reinstated where it had been lost. As a result, this beautiful villa is once again in harmony with its surroundings and the way its residents use it.

The before-and-after images show how a carefully considered design can give an existing home a new future."

Would you opt for a major renovation or a completely new build?

• Bronze

"The bronze finish on the kitchen drawers harmonizes with the granite Belvedere Leather countertop. The granite features a subtle bronze color, which blends perfectly with the metallic finish on the drawers. This combination enhances the aesthetic of the kitchen with an appearance of warmth and luxury.”
