Congratulations to Fiona Lutjenhuis and the team of 1646! 💕

Experimental Art Space 1646 invited artist Fiona Lutjenhuis to develop a new site-specific installation for their pavilion at the Gwangju Biennale.

Lutjenhuis reflects upon the influence imaginary worlds can have on our understanding of reality. Within a submerged world, Counting Waves Till We Are Reunited Once More, fantasizes about past myths to rethink the future.

The Gwangju Biennale is Asia’s largest and oldest contemporary art biennale. The 16th ⁠Gwangju Biennale titled You must change your life is curated by Singaporean artist ⁠Ho Tzu Nyen and a team of associate curators.

The international group exhibition “Creation Myths and Other Beginnings”, with work by Fiona Lutjenhuis opens tomorrow Nest 🪼

The show explores non-dominant creation myths – stories passed down from generation to generation through oral tradition, or speculative, fictional alternatives. What can we learn from these stories about our social reality and possible future? Fiona Lutjenhuis is exhibiting two new works for the exhibition, which focus on the myth of Atlantis.

Next week we participate in the second edition of Art Weiland where we present work by Lonneke van der P***n 🩵

The work of Lonneke van der P***n (NL, 1985) is a growing visual investigation in which one theme prevails: the aesthetic pleasures of everyday life. She reminds us of the fact that everything around us is shaped, by both nature and man. How all these things take shape and meaning in our lives on this planet and the actions that go with them is the breeding ground for her work.

Van der P***n wants to amaze the viewer. She looks at everything with the same interest. It makes no difference to her whether her subject is a rusty oil bottle in the dusty rocky landscapes of Croatia or a Margiela handbag in a Parisian studio, and whether she shoots with a professional camera or simply a phone. Her aim is to capture a moment and make the viewer look at the world with the same admiration and love.

In recent years, she has built up a large collection of photographs on subjects ranging from plastic chairs, tablecloths, stray shopping bags and jerry cans to stones, tent cloths, exotic fruits and boys in swimming trunks having cocktails. Instead of simply recording these everyday subjects, she literally puts them in a different light. This leads to a sometimes visible, sometimes invisible shift in reality. She enlarges subjects and reduces the image to a cleaned-up essence, which results in compositions in which shape, colour and light relate to each other in a well-considered way.

“An uncle gave me an old textbook on manufacturing technology. It covered industrial production processes and contained lots of photographs of machinery from the 1920s. That book was a source of inspiration for some time. When I take a closer look at this work, I realise that I’d also drawn my first dollhouse back then!”
