Conversation with Charlotte Griffioen on collaborating on complex high-rise projects

‘Toren van Babel’ is a monthly series within the Architectenweb Podcast (Architectenweb.nl). In each episode, architect Daan Roggeveen (MORE Architecture) speaks with designers, developers, and other experts, each bringing their own perspective on high-rise buildings. The aim is to answer one central question: what does it take to create a truly great tall building?

This month’s guest is architect Charlotte Griffioen (Charlotte), Director at MVSA Architects.

The conversation focuses on a number of remarkable high-rise projects. Over the past few years, MVSA has completed several highly complex developments, including Wonderwoods in Utrecht, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) building, and Pulse at Amsterdam’s Zuidas district. Each project presented its own unique set of challenges. MVSA frequently collaborates with other designers on these projects. The discussion explores how these collaborations come about, how responsibilities are divided, who contributes which expertise, and how lessons learned from one project are applied to the next.

The episode also covers Charlotte’s experience in the United States, the evolution of MVSA Architects’ work and design approach, and the divide that often exists between the worlds of architects and contractors, and how Charlotte works to bring those disciplines closer together.

Het Slotervaart featured in the July/August edition of Hello Zuidas! ✨

is more than the transformation of a former hospital. It is the creation of a new urban ecosystem where healthcare, research, education and entrepreneurship come together under one roof.

Designed by MVSA Architects, the rooftop extension gives the building a distinctive new silhouette while strengthening its mixed-use identity. Two light, transparent office floors complement the existing structure, creating flexible space for innovation, collaboration and panoramic views across Amsterdam.

Since reopening, Het Slotervaart has grown into a vibrant healthcare hub where more than 50 healthcare organisations are shaping the future of care together.

We are proud to have contributed to this next chapter in the building’s history, demonstrating how thoughtful architecture can preserve heritage while creating new opportunities for the city and its communities.

We are honored that the jury has recognized this shared ambition. Congratulations to all fellow nominees and thank you to everyone who contributed to making Wonderwoods a reality.

Two projects, two eras, one opportunity to experience MVSA’s work up close.

Interested in Dutch architecture or looking for an inspiring visit in Amsterdam? We invite you to explore two MVSA models currently on display at Arcam (Architectuur Centrum Amsterdam).

As part of Arcam’s ongoing exhibitions, visitors can experience both a classic and a contemporary project from our portfolio.

On the ground floor, the model of the iconic Infinity Building, formerly known as ING House, is featured in the From Model to Metropolis exhibition.

On the first floor, our model for the Amsterdam University Library is presented as part of the Amsterdam Architecture Prize 2026 exhibition.

We are pleased to see these projects exhibited together, reflecting different moments in our architectural practice and approach to design.

If you visit the exhibition, let us know which model is your favourite.

Celebrating 5 Years of Westfield Mall of the Netherlands! 🎉

From its roots as Leidsenhage to becoming a national attraction, in Leidschendam has redefined modern retail and urban leisure.

Today, this iconic mall welcomes 15 million visitors every year, showing the world the magic of physical retail.

Designed by MVSA, the mall is a masterpiece of fluid, sculptural architecture. Its signature white ‘silk scarf’ façade wraps the building in elegant curves, while inside, a 1.8 km figure-of-eight loop guides visitors through flagship stores, unique concepts, the Central Plaza, and the Dining Plaza, creating a continuous journey of discovery.

More than shopping, Westfield is a multifunctional destination with a cinema, fresh food market, and designer galleries. 🛍️🍴🎬

This milestone reflects the vision of and the dedication of our team, demonstrating how thoughtful design and innovative architecture can transform a retail space into a vibrant urban destination.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to these first five extraordinary years!
