We design and build attractive spaces for people. As socially committed architects, our mission is to improve the built environment and thus the quality of life. In all our projects we focus on the users and facilitate interaction between people, thereby helping to create healthy communities. Our buildings therefore communicate clearly with their users and with the surroundings. Together with our clients and advisors, we realise architecture that gives meaning, defines identity, instils pride and enhances solidarity. While the striking features of our designs are usually easy to recognise, their aesthetic qualities often reveal themselves only in the second instance. VMX Architects is an internationally operating, prize-winning office founded in 1995 in Amsterdam. Our work ranges from the typically Dutch bike shed to a VIP terminal at Schiphol Airport, and from social housing to university buildings in Shanghai. Our social commitment is reflected in our frequent lectures, our contribution to education, our participation on advisory councils and juries, and our summer school.

FROM THE ARCHIVE - IJBURG 23
More than twenty years after completion, we revisited IJburg 23 in Amsterdam. The brief started from an assumption about IJburg: people move to the edge of the city for privacy and a garden. VMX took this as the starting point for a block organised around an inner court, giving every apartment a small garden and a double orientation. A car elevator moves the parking to the upper floors, leaving space for real soil and real trees at ground level.

We went back to see how it feels to live here today, and to hear from Marina and Frank who do.

FLOORPLANS – TIC TAC TOE
TWO SIDES TO EVERY HOME  Designed for families, the floorplans of Tic Tac Toe are organised around flexibility and quality of living.

All apartments have at least two orientations, either as corner or dual-aspect apartments. This brings daylight and natural ventilation from different sides, varied views and access to outdoor space. Inside, rooms are similar in size and are not fixed to one specific use. They can be opened up or separated as the needs of a family change over time.

Like the game it takes its name from, Tic Tac Toe works with a clear framework while leaving room for different ways of living. Home, work, play, sleep and being together can all find their place within that structure.

MEET SOFIA
Sofia combines architecture with a strong technical and structured approach. As a Junior Technical Architect at VMX, she works across different phases of a project, with a particular focus on BIM. She keeps an eye on the models and BIM workflows, making sure they are structured correctly and meet the requirements of each project, while also contributing to design decisions.

Originally from Italy, Sofia studied architecture at the University of Florence before moving to Amsterdam and joining VMX.

At VMX, Sofia is currently working on Schoterboshoff, where she is involved in both the development of the design and its BIM requirements. She also contributes to competitions and supports projects such as Amber at Amsteloever.

NEW PROJECTS
BUIKSLOTERHAM - SHELTERS IN THE LANDSCAPE
Positioned between the water and the new green landscape of Buiksloterham, the two buildings are designed to connect the homes to their surroundings while providing shelter within them.

Large balconies extend the apartments towards the water and park. In the green block, residents enter from either the garden or the quay, before briefly stepping outside again onto a gallery overlooking the garden. This creates different transitions between the home and the landscape — from the more collective gallery to the private balconies facing the water.

At street level, five duplex apartments have their own front doors, bringing residential life directly to the public space. On the roof, planting, penthouses and large decks create another layer of outdoor space.

Together, these spaces offer different ways of being outside — providing shelter from the openness and wind of Amsterdam Noord, while creating opportunities for residents to meet and connect.

VMX ARCHITECTS — FLOORPLANS
DNZ Designed for a department of the Ministry of Water Management, DNZ combines a characteristic appearance with generic use.

The vertical circulation and technical spaces are located outside the main volume. What remains is a completely free office floor, supported by a wide-span structure with only four columns inside the perimeter — allowing for maximum flexibility of use.

On the outside, the opposite happens. The nine-storey volume has a highly specific character, with circular windows, blue ceramic tiles and four black plaster towers. The relatively closed façade reduces solar heat entering the building, decreasing the need for cooling and therefore its energy use.

BUIKSLOTERHAM - ONE BECOMES TWO
Buiksloterham Kavel 19C is part of a larger development in Amsterdam Noord, positioned between the Johan van Hasseltkade and a new green landscape.
Originally conceived as a single L-shaped volume, VMX split the building into two separate blocks as the floor plans developed, avoiding dark internal corners and long corridors.

Rather than treating C1 and C2 as completely separate buildings, VMX designed them as non-identical twins. Both share a strong horizontal expression, while differences in material, texture and proportion give each building its own identity.

The split also creates a narrow space between the two buildings. In contrast to the openness of Buiksloterham, this introduces a more intimate and sheltered space between the water and the garden.

Drawing on the industrial history of the area, the architecture combines industrial references with colour, texture and large openings — giving the two buildings what VMX describes as a ‘sweet industrial’ character.

MEET CONOR
Conor brings a sensitive approach to his work, navigating different disciplines and perspectives throughout the process. He values being involved from the first concept through to construction, following a project through its different phases to understand what is possible and how architecture can shape the way people experience and live their everyday lives.

Originally from Ireland, Conor studied in the UK and later worked in the UK and Canada before moving to Amsterdam, drawn to the city’s appetite for architectural innovation.

Conor has been part of the VMX team since 2019. Over the years, he has worked on projects including Waalkwartier and Binck City Park. He is currently working on the Buiksloterham development in Amsterdam Noord, alongside a new residential project in Oman.

MY ITHAKA
In Almere, VMX set out to challenge the sameness of suburbia by designing a catalogue of spaces for different uses. Residents could combine these building blocks to create a home that truly fits their needs. Every row house offers room to extend, allowing different ways of living to take shape within the same framework. The first ingredient for a diverse community.

Zoom out, and this diversity becomes one urban gesture. A U-shaped block wraps around a 1.1-hectare collective park, bringing different homes and ways of living together around a shared green heart.
On the fourth side, a canal forms a natural edge, extending the view towards Cascadepark and connecting My Ithaka to the wider green landscape.

24 to 400
From 24m² studios to 400m² lofts, a diverse range of dwellings creates space for a diverse community.

The housing rises from two to four storeys, with a single peak of five, before stepping back down again. Every apartment faces the green space at the centre and has direct access to it.

The collective landscape provides space for residents to meet, play and spend time together. Individually customised homes are combined with shared spaces, supporting a sense of ownership, belonging and collectivity.

ITHAKA, ALMERE
Combining urban qualities with a shared landscape. In Almere, Ithaka features a U-shaped residential block embracing a 1.1-hectare collective park, complete with its own natural swimming pond. By providing every resident with direct access to this green sanctuary and refreshing water, the design seamlessly blurs the boundary between private living and collective nature.
An example of how architecture can foster community, encourage a sense of ownership, and strengthen belonging.
