Scrolling was the last job left to us.

Filmed by Silver Tjepkema in the Theatrum Anatomicum of the Waag in Amsterdam, a 17th-century room built for watching anatomy lessons. Now it watches a row of machines take the scrolling off our hands.

Infinite Scroll, a limited edition by Tjep., made for our 25th anniversary. See them move in person at Dutch Design Week, Kazerne Eindhoven, until 25 October, or watch the full film on tjep.com (link in bio).

Be honest: would you let it do your scrolling for you? πŸ‘‡

Opening today β€” Infinite Scroll at Dutch Design Week.

A machine with a single motor, a walking linkage and a stylus that lands on the glass. It takes the most automatic gesture of our time and does it slowly, on purpose, in brass, steel and corten.

In Social Dance the Valets move as one. They swipe through an endless crowd of faces, and not one of those people exists.

25 years of Tjep., in one gesture.

The debut. Codrico factory, Rotterdam, four days in September.

Five machines scrolled without pause, and something unexpected happened in front of them: people stopped, and watched. Nobody reached for their own phone. For a few minutes at a time, a room full of visitors stood still while the machines did the scrolling for them.

That was the idea, but we hadn't counted on it working so literally.

Thank you to everyone who came, asked, argued and stayed longer than they'd planned. And to Big Art for giving a new work a monumental first room.

Infinite Scroll β€” kinetic sculptures in corten, stainless steel and brass. Edition of 8 per material.

Next: Dutch Design Week, Kazerne Eindhoven, 17–25 October.

A crowd with nobody in it.

Every face on these screens is generated. None of them exists. They pass by in an endless feed, never repeating, while the machines below swipe them away one by one.

Shown in the Theatrum Anatomicum at the Waag in Amsterdam β€” a room built four centuries ago for the public dissection of a human body. Social media carries on the same work, only faster: faces opened up, judged, discarded, by the thousand, every day. The scalpel is still here β€” a steel point, lowered onto a body. Only now the bodies are virtual, and the scrolling is the real thing. And the scrolling has been taken over by the machines. Leaving us free at last.

Machines scrolling together, in choreography. Like us, only in sync.

Leave them running and they'll still be dancing when the faces on the screen grow old.

Infinite Scroll β€” 8 signed and numbered kinetic sculptures in corten steel, stainless steel or brass. Phone included ;-)

See them at Dutch Design Week, Kazerne Eindhoven, 17–25 October.

Tjep. ❀️ AI β€” 13

Clockwork Love Wings (2010). The mechanical heart takes flight β€” a winged heart of interlocking cogs, etched in gold-plated stainless steel and kept, like any precious mechanism, with its own miniature key. Some hearts you wind up; this one you set free. Now in the Susan Grant Lewin Collection at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Not a single feather redrawn β€” the AI only built the world around it.

Oogst 1 (2009). A self-sufficient farm for one β€” a living pod raised on three legs inside its own greenhouse, with chickens, a windmill, solar panels and a mini recycling plant closing the loop on food, energy, heat, oxygen and waste. Oogst is Dutch for "harvest"; in principle, you could live here without ever leaving the house. Shown at the Designhuis Eindhoven in Li Edelkoort's "Boer zoekt stijl".

Not a single pane redrawn β€” the AI only built the world around it.

Chrysalide Chair (2019). A Louis XIV chair remembered from childhood, caught in the act of becoming something else β€” soft Alcantara held by bronze limbs that slip out of the frame and keep growing. As we said at the time: "I tried to visualize the aesthetic of metamorphosis in an elegant contemporary furniture piece." A unique piece, unveiled at Masterly The Hague.

Not a single tendril redrawn β€” the AI only built the world around it.

Tjep. ❀️ AI β€” 10

Clockwork Love Arrow (2010). Desire, built as a mechanism β€” the Arrow from our Clockwork Love series, where cut and layered elements stack up into what looks like a machine frozen at the moment of impact. First shown at Gallery Ra in Amsterdam, from the same family as the mechanical heart that opened this series. Love here doesn't simply arrive: it is aimed, wound and released.

Not a single cog redrawn β€” the AI only built the world around it.
