CONSTRUCTION SITE PRESSURE WILL MAKE YOU QUESTION YOUR ENTIRE EXISTENCE! 😭😭
This is the part they never taught us in engineering school ooo
In school, they taught us how to calculate loads, design beams, analyse structures and manage projects.
But nobody prepared us for the REAL pressure that comes with this profession. 🤦♂️😂
Nobody taught us that you could finish a project, calculate your expected profit, and still struggle to pay your workers because your estimate was wrong. 😭
Nobody taught us that some workers could use 2 × 2 on your head and still look you in the eye to tell you, “Oga Engineer, na so we dey do am!” 😂😂
Nobody taught us that the profit from Site A might have to cover the losses on Site B, simply because you need to keep your workers busy and prevent the whole operation from collapsing. 😩
Nobody taught us that a project you won with excitement could become the reason you lose sleep, peace of mind and money you had already planned to use for something else.
Nobody taught us that you could spend weeks preparing to win a contract, only for the competition, financial pressure and the burden of delivering to leave you wondering whether the struggle is even worth it. 😭
Nobody taught us that sometimes, you would stand on-site looking like the most confident person in the room while your mind is calculating salaries, material costs, outstanding payments, variations and the money you borrowed to keep the project moving. 😂💔
Nobody taught us that the client could change the design after casting the slab and still ask you, “Engineer, how much will it cost to adjust it? Is it not a small thing?” 🤦♂️🤣
And nobody taught us that, beyond being professionally and physically active, you also need spiritual strength, wisdom, discipline and the right people around you to survive the pressure of this business.
Because, my brother, if you don't take care of yourself physically, mentally and spiritually, the same profession you love can kpai you.
And the funniest part is When everything goes well, everybody is a project expert.
But when something goes wrong, everybody remembers that YOU ARE THE ENGINEER! 😂😭👷♂️
Engineering school taught us how to carry structural loads. Nobody prepared us for the financial, emotional and business loads that come with construction!
Yet, we keep showing up, solving problems, managing people and trying to turn drawings into reality.
That's why proper estimating, realistic pricing, cash-flow management, clear contracts and good project supervision are not optional. They can make the difference between a thriving construction business and one that is constantly struggling.
And please, fellow engineers, don't sacrifice your health or your peace of mind trying to prove that you are strong. No contract is worth your life. When the pressure becomes overwhelming, talk to someone you trust and seek professional support when needed.
What is that experience you had on a construction site that made you say
“If they had told me this in engineering school, I would have negotiated my salary differently!” 😭🤣
Let's talk! Our younger engineers need to know the reality before they enter the field.
