FOUNDATION PROCEDURE: HOW TO START YOUR BUILDING THE RIGHT WAY

The foundation is the strength of every building. If it is weak, the entire house will suffer no matter how beautiful it looks above. Many houses collapse today not because of roofing or finishing, but because the foundation was not properly done.

Here is a detailed step-by-step guide to a standard foundation:

1. Site Clearing

Before anything, the land must be cleared. Remove bushes, grasses, trees, stumps, and topsoil. This ensures you have a level and stable surface to work with. A clean site makes measurement and supervision easier.

2. Setting Out

This is the stage where the exact positions of your building walls are marked on the ground. Professionals use pegs, profile boards, strings, and sometimes theodolites for accuracy. A small mistake here can shift your building or even cause you to encroach on another person’s land. Always involve a trained engineer or builder at this stage.

3. Excavation

After marking out, trenches are dug according to the width and depth specified in the drawing. The depth depends on the soil type and load of the building. Weak soils need deeper foundations. Never guess—use the soil report and engineer’s design.

4. Foundation Concrete (Blinding)

A thin layer of concrete (usually 50–75mm thick) is placed at the base of the trenches. This is called “blinding.” It provides a clean, stable surface for blockwork and prevents soil moisture from weakening the blocks.

5. Blockwork to DPC Level

Blocks are laid inside the trench and raised up to the Damp Proof Course (DPC) level. This stage determines the height of your house from the ground. A good DPC prevents water from rising into the walls (which causes dampness and peeling paint later).

6. Backfilling & Compaction

After blockwork, the open spaces in the trench are filled with laterite or sand. This filling must be done layer by layer and compacted properly. If it is not well compacted, the floor may sink or crack in future.

7. Oversite Concrete (German Floor)

Finally, a thick layer of concrete (often 100–150mm) is poured over the filled area to form a solid base for the building floor. This stage is also where plumbing pipes and electrical conduits can be embedded before concreting.

Conclusion:
The foundation is not where you should rush or cut costs. A small error here can cause big problems later. Build strong, build smart, and your house will stand firm for generations.

Quality staircase construction starts from your choice of Repose angle.

For steep-free and free flowing staircases, Constructions Co. Ltd recommends angles between 30 and 35 degrees.

REASONS:
If it goes beyond that range:
- it becomes difficult to climb
- People must lift their legs higher.
- Walking becomes tiring.
- it becomes Unsafe as steep stairs increase the chance of slipping or falling.
- Descending becomes especially dangerous.
- Reduced stability
- The foot has less horizontal surface for support.
- Balance becomes harder to maintain.
- Often violates building standards

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HORSE BENCH & TOP BARS IN SLAB CONSTRUCTION ✍️

The relationship is very direct: the horse bench is what holds the top bars in place.

In slab construction, TOP BARS are the reinforcement placed near the upper surface of the slab, mainly to resist negative bending moments - called HOGGING. These bars must stay at a specific height within the slab thickness to work properly.

A horse bench (or rebar chair) is used to support and maintain the position of these top bars during construction. Without it, the bars would sag or drop down when workers walk on them or when concrete is poured.
So in simple terms:

Horse bench → support system

Top bars → reinforcement being supported

The horse bench ensures:

1) Correct cover (distance from the slab surface)

2) Proper alignment of top reinforcement

3) Stability during concreting

In a nutshell, If horse benches are not used or are poorly placed, the top bars can shift downward, which reduces the slab’s strength and may lead to cracking or structural failure over time.
