COLUMN
Columns are vertical or inclined structural members, which transfers loads from superstructure to the foundation.

Below are basic considerations for design of columns
1) Minimum size of column is 225x225mm (the picture below shows 350x350mm square columns)

2) Choose rectangular column, if load acts at eccentric axis of the column.

3) Minimum bar lapping length is 60D, and lapping should be staggered. DO NOT LAP ALL LONGITUDINAL BARS ON THE SAME ZONE.

4) Minimum of 4 nos longitudinal bars are required for square and rectangular, while 6 nos are required for circular columns.

5) Minimum bar diameter for longitudinal bar is 12mm while minimum dia for lateral tie (links) is 8mm.

6) One end of the longitudinal bar should be duck-leg, and should be tied to the bottom bar of the footings linking it with the foundation.

7) Concrete grade of C-20 and rebar of Fe-500 steel are recommended to be used for columns.

8) Minimum concrete cover should be 40mm

9) Minimum spacing for links should be 200c/c.

Expansion Joints.
Why do we introduce expansion joints in rigid pavement or massive concrete slabs?

Under high temperature concrete has the tendency to expand and contract, if expansion joints are not been introduced it will result to cracks and deformation of concrete structures. You can also visibly find these expansion joints on bridges and flyovers. Some of the expansion groove may be covered with bitumen while the two separated concrete grid will be connected with dowel bars.

Why do we coat Foundations?
Coating is a process of Waterproofing, it helps to create barriers that prevent water seepage and moisture ingress into the structural members. It prevents cracks and structural damages and enhances longevity of the structure.
