One of the most important reasons for groundingelectrical currents is that it protects your appliances, your home and everyone in it from surges in electricity. ... If your electrical system is grounded, all of that excess electricity will go into the earth — rather than frying everything connected to your system.

HOW TO CHECK FOR BAD ELECTRICAL WIRING
sometimes thousands of fires are started in homes because of bad in electrical wiring. This fact compounds experts who constantly remind us of the need to call in an electrician to check your house on a regular basis. Spending some money to have a wiring checked is like an insurance policy that can guarantee your family’s safety as well as provide added protection for your most valuable financial asset, your home.

Of course, it is also possible that you may be able to perform a cursory check yourself before calling in an expert but you still need to have some information about how to do this properly. Although you should never rely upon your own expertise, here are a few tips that can give you a heads up as to whether you should call in an electrician to do a thorough check for you.

A fuse box or circuit breaker protects the electrical circuits in your home, so it’s important to check them regularly. Usually found in the garage or on the outside of the house, you can open the box and check for signs of irregularity, like the voltage reading 0. Other, more obvious signs of electrical wiring issues includes damage to wires within the box. If you notice any issues or damage you should call an electrician immediately. It is ironic that many electrical fires could have been prevented by regular maintenance checks. It is important to have your wiring checked every 2 or 3 years to make sure no damage has occurred in the intervening years. A professional electrician is the only person equipped to provide you with a thorough check and to give you the peace of mind you need. Some other tell-tale signs that you need professional help is when you find melted fuse boxes or when you see sparks when plugging in an appliance around the home. Overheating of appliances in this way can result in a fire so unplug it immediately and take it for repairs.Remember that every household electrical system is different and some houses will need more regular checks than others. The only way to find out is to get an electrician to tell you how often you should check your house wiring. In particular, older homes expose you to a greater chance of danger because most modern houses built during the last 10 years will have electrical systems installed which minimise problems. Nevertheless, you should never assume this is always the case and calling electrician at least once every 5 years. These days most households have a plethora of electrical appliances with new additions almost every month. When you consider HD television gear, sound systems, air-conditioners and dozens of plug-in chargers you need to be even more vigilant.

CIRCUIT OVERLOAD

One of the biggest causes of frequent circuit breaker tripping is the overloading of power boards. Most homes and apartments, even newer ones, don’t have enough power points to cater to, for example, a complete home entertainment unit setup. If circuit breakers in your home are tripping frequently, it could be down to circuit overload. Prevent this by:

Never daisy-chain power boards.

Remove devices that aren’t in use (for example, phone chargers still draw power even when not connected).

Spread your electrical needs around. Don’t overburden a single circuit.

Be mindful of how you connect devices around the home – what’s in use, and what is unnecessary.

LIGHT SWITCHES NOT WORKING PROPERLY

Dimmer switches that don’t adjust light properly can often be attributed to shoddy workmanship or sub-standard products.
If you have just moved into a new house and find switches that don’t seem to activate anything at all, this might be a sign the switches have been superseded and fixtures removed, or it could be a fault in the outlet, circuit or wiring. Consult with an electrician if you’re experiencing issues with switches in your house.

FREQUENT ELECTRICAL SURGES

Electrical surges can be caused by anything from lightning strikes, damage to power lines, faulty appliances and bad electrical wiring in the house. While an actual surge only lasts a microsecond, frequent surges can damage the electrical components connected to your home, degrading their life expectancy significantly.
If you experience frequent electrical surges, the culprit is probably an electrical device connected to the home grid or the wiring itself. Try removing any cheaply made devices or powerboards from the outlet to see if this prevents the surges. Otherwise, it might be time to consult a professional electrician.

CIRCUIT BREAKER TRIPPING FREQUENTLY:-

High wattage items like microwaves and hairdryers can trip circuit breakers, particularly when other power consuming items are used on the same source. A circuit breaker is designed to protect you and your home, so when it does trip, that’s a sign it’s doing its job.

WIRING SAFETY
Safety should be the primary concern of anyone working with electricity. Although most household electrical repairs are simple and straightforward, always use caution and good judgment when working with electrical wiring or devices. Common sense can prevent accidents. The basic rule of electrical safety is: Always turn off power to the area or device you are working on. At the main service panel, remove the fuse or shut off the circuit breaker that control the circuit you are servicing.

Grounding of the home electrical system is accomplished by wiring the household electrical system to a metal cold water pipe and metal grounding rods that are buried in the earth.

GROUNDING AND POLARISATION
Electricity always seeks to return to its source and complete a continuous circuit. Contrary to popular belief, electricity will take all available return paths to its source, not just the path of lowest resistance. In a household wiring system, this return path is provided by white neutral wires that return current to the main service panel. From the service panel, current returns along the uninsulated neutral service wire to a power pole transformer. You will see the terms grounding and bonding used in this and other books about electricity. These terms are often misunderstood. You should understand the difference to safely work on electrical circuits. Bonding connects the non-current-carrying metal parts of the electrical system, such as metal boxes and metal conduit, in a continuous low-resistance path back to the main service panel. If this metal becomes energized (a ground fault), current travels on the bonded metal and quickly increases to an amount that trips the circuit breaker or blows the fuse. The dead circuit alerts people to a problem. Other metal that could become energized also must be bonded to the home’s electrical system.
