Design begins with light … not just brightness but mood, depth and function.

Before thinking about light fixtures, think about daylight.

Maximise natural light, then introduce a layered artificial lighting design to support it, not compete with it.

Large windows, skylights and smart placement are key.

And when it comes to artificial light, build in flexibility for different moods and tasks, creating a cohesive and enjoyable space. Because when the lighting is right, everything else works better.

We’ve always believed that design is for everyone, no one group deserves it more than another. Yet too often, design remains a privilege, out of reach for many due to factors like economic hardship, limited creative thinking by designers, and other project constraints.

Francis Kéré’s work powerfully exemplifies the belief that good design should be accessible to all. His architecture consistently responds to climate, culture, and context.

Ilojo Bar, as it was popularly known, was also home to a music shop owned by the legendary musician Victor Olaiya. Sadly, the building was demolished under questionable circumstances, a reminder of the urgent need to preserve our architectural and cultural heritage. While a few other buildings from this era still stand, it’s imperative that we, as a society, take deliberate steps to protect and maintain them.

The Gobarau Minaret stands as a beautiful testament to our indigenous architectural heritage. Unfortunately, with colonialism and the resultant introduction of foreign building materials, we gradually abandoned our traditional building techniques. Thankfully, this minaret has been preserved. The hope is that structures like this will continue to inspire and inform contemporary Nigerian architecture.
