Young Construction Professionals, Be Careful Who You Learn From
I am concerned about how many young engineers, builders, architects, quantity surveyors, and site supervisors accept construction content online without verifying whether it reflects real site practice.
Something is happening across our industry that every young construction professional should pay attention to.
Many people are learning construction from content creators who have little or no experience executing projects accurately. They speak confidently about site processes, yet they have never managed a real project from setting out to handover using engineering principles.
This is not an attack on anyone. Everyone has the right to learn, teach, and improve.
My concern is for the young professionals who accept every video, post, or tutorial as construction truth without testing it against actual site ex*****on.
Some are learning reinforcement detailing from people who have never been properly trained by experienced professionals or supervised reinforcement placement on real projects.
Some are learning concreting from people who have never managed batching, placement, vibration, curing, and quality control under actual site conditions.
Some are learning setting out from people who have never established control points, transferred levels accurately, or carried out proper site measurements using surveying instruments.
Some are learning project management from people who have never been responsible for delivering a building safely, on time, within budget, and according to specifications.
The internet rewards confidence more than competence.
A person can produce beautiful graphics, animations, and videos while lacking the practical knowledge required to solve real construction problems.
Recently, I watched someone teaching an incorrect method of plumbing a reinforced concrete column Formwork , and many young professionals were commenting, “Correct!” and “Ride on!”
That is dangerous.
The engineering method for plumbing a column is straightforward. A plumb bob remains one of the most reliable tools for checking verticality. I have demonstrated and taught this repeatedly because it is based on sound engineering practice, not internet trends.
Construction is different.
Concrete does not respond to confidence.
Reinforcement does not obey opinions.
Buildings do not stand because someone speaks well on social media.
They stand because engineering principles are correctly applied on site.
Before you build your professional career around someone’s content, apply these filters.
Filter 1: Look at Executed Projects, Not Polished Content
Anyone can explain construction online.
Ask yourself:
• What projects have they successfully executed according to accepted engineering principles?
• Have they managed actual site operations while following established construction procedures?
• Can they demonstrate practical ex*****on, not just theoretical explanations or attractive content?
Real projects speak louder than edited videos.
Filter 2: Check Whether the Teaching Matches Site Reality
Does the advice align with engineering standards, design specifications, standards recommendations, and accepted construction practice?
Can experienced site engineers verify what is being taught?
If not, investigate further before adopting it.
Filter 3: Learn From Those Who Solve Real Site Problems
Construction is full of unexpected challenges.
Ground conditions change.
Materials arrive late.
Drawings conflict.
Weather interrupts work.
Unexpected site conditions emerge.
The best teachers are those who have faced these realities and know how to solve them safely, efficiently, and professionally.
Experience always leaves fingerprints.
Filter 4: Verify Before You Practise
Never implement a construction method simply because it received thousands of likes.
Always cross-check with:
• Engineering codes and standards
• Design drawings and specifications
• Experienced site engineers
• Practical site observations
• Multiple credible technical sources
Your reputation will be built by the quality of your work, not by the popularity of the content you consume.
Filter 5: Ask Yourself Whether You Want Their Professional Career
Do not admire only their online presence.
Ask yourself:
Would I exchange my professional career for theirs?
Their completed projects.
Their technical competence.
Their problem-solving ability.
Their reputation among contractors, consultants, clients, and fellow professionals.
If your answer is no, do not copy their methods blindly.
Young professionals, construction is learned on site as much as it is learned in the classroom.
Content should support practical experience, not replace it.
Watch experienced engineers.
Visit active construction sites.
Ask questions.
Read drawings.
Study engineering codes.
Handle the tools.
Observe skilled craftsmen.
Most importantly, learn why things are done, not just how someone demonstrates them online.
Remember this:
A building does not care how many followers an engineer has.
It only responds to correct design, proper ex*****on, quality workmanship, and sound engineering judgment.
Do not build your construction career on borrowed opinions.
Build it on verified knowledge, practical experience, continuous learning, and proven site ex*****on.
Your future as a construction professional is too valuable to be shaped by content alone.
Think critically.
Verify everything.
Respect practical experience.
Build with knowledge, not noise.
Engineering is not about who speaks the loudest. It is about who gets it right on site.
