🏛️ Events & Community Centre
Location: Southwest Nigeria
Year:2023
This 2023 design concept for a community hub in Southwest Nigeria presents a compelling study in contrasts and modern minimalism. The structure is defined by a bold, rectilinear massing wrapped in a crisp white structural frame. This "exoskeleton" acts as a visual boundary, dramatically highlighting the deep, textured dark facade behind it—reminiscent of rugged stone or earth tones that ground the building in its local context.
Key Design Features:
1. Facade & Materiality: The juxtaposition of the smooth white frame against the rough, dark cladding creates a striking visual weight. It feels solid yet contemporary.
2. Transparency & Connection: The fenestration strategy is open and inviting. Large ribbon windows on the upper level and floor-to-ceiling glass on the ground floor dissolve the barrier between interior and exterior spaces. This transparency is crucial for a community-focused building, signaling openness to the public.
3. Social Spaces: The design prioritizes gathering. Glass-railed balconies allow for vertical social interaction, while the ground floor opens up directly onto a sprawling green lawn. The landscape architecture—featuring large boulders, manicured shrubs, and a prominent palm tree—softens the rigid geometry of the building, creating a park-like atmosphere for informal events.
4. Climate Response: The deep roof overhangs and covered balconies provide essential shading, a smart passive design move for the Nigerian climate.
Overall, the project successfully merges contemporary aesthetics with the functional needs of a social hub, offering a welcoming, breathable environment for community engagement.
