The First Person You Should Hire IS an Architect. Here's Why.
There's a growing trend online claiming that the first person you should hire is not an architect. While it may attract attention, it doesn't reflect how successful building projects are delivered.
Look...An architect should be your first professional contact when planning to build.
1. The architect transforms your idea into a buildable vision. Before any structural calculations, quantities, or construction activities begin, someone must understand your needs, your budget, your lifestyle, and the purpose of the building. That is the architect's primary role.
2. Every other consultant works from the architectural design. The structural engineer designs the structure based on the architect's drawings. The electrical and mechanical engineers design their services around the architectural layout. The quantity surveyor prepares accurate cost estimates from the architect's plans. Without an architectural concept, the rest of the design team has nothing concrete to coordinate.
3. Good planning saves money. Many people believe hiring an architect is an unnecessary expense. In reality, poor planning is far more expensive. Design changes during construction, wasted materials, and functional mistakes often cost much more than proper professional design from the beginning.
4. Architects coordinate the design process. On well-managed projects, the architect usually leads the design team, ensuring that aesthetics, functionality, engineering requirements, and client expectations all work together.
Does this mean architects are more important than engineers?
Not at all.
Construction is a team effort. Just like a beautiful design without structural integrity is unsafe. A structurally sound building without functional planning may not meet the client's needs.
So the best projects are delivered when architects, structural engineers, quantity surveyors, builders, and other professionals work together from the earliest stages.

In most building projects, the answer is the architect develops the vision. The engineers make it stand. The builder brings it to life.
