The Cadright Global Research Cell (CGRC), in collaboration with the School of Architecture, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, invites participation in the Africa-Wide Green Building Research Challenge (AwGBRC) 2026 research survey.

The Africa-Wide Green Building Research Challenge is a pan-African initiative focused on advancing sustainable and climate-responsive building design across the continent. The study explores how individuals and teams understand, apply, and adopt green building strategies, with particular emphasis on the use of performance-based tools such as EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies).

𝐀𝐢𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲
The research aims to:
- Generate high-quality, African-led research on sustainable architecture and green building practices.
- Evaluate the environmental performance and feasibility of green design proposals.
- Examine the adoption, usability, and accessibility of green building tools across different user groups.
- Strengthen Africa’s green skills ecosystem.
- Support policy recommendations for integrating sustainability practices within built-environment education and professional practice in Africa.

The challenge is open to students, graduates, professionals, academics, and independent innovators across Africa who are interested in sustainable and climate-responsive design.

Participation in this research is entirely voluntary. Participants may choose to take part, decline, or withdraw at any time without penalty. All information provided will be treated as confidential and used strictly for research and capacity-development purposes.

About the 2026 challenge.
The Africa-Wide Green Building Research Challenge 2026 is a continent-spanning design and research initiative organised by Cadright Global Research Cell (CGRC) in collaboration with the School of Architecture, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

This challenge brings together students, early-career professionals, established practitioners and experts across the built environment to explore innovative, climate-responsive and resource-efficient design solutions tailored to Africa’s diverse contexts.

Unlike conventional concept competitions, this is a research-driven and practice-oriented platform. Participants are encouraged to investigate local climate realities, social and cultural needs, material availability, affordability constraints, and on-the-ground sustainability challenges, then translate their findings into feasible, high-impact green building proposals.

Through this challenge, participants will explore:

Passive and active climate-smart design strategies suited to African climates
Human-centred design that responds to people, place and community
Low-carbon, affordable and context-appropriate material choices
Practical solutions for Africa’s evolving built environment, grounded in research
Although this competition is not centred on EDGE, to ensure fair and transparent evaluation, submissions will be assessed using three performance pillars commonly applied in green building practice: energy performance, water efficiency and material resource optimisation.

The initiative aligns with the EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) framework by the International Finance Corporation, encouraging participants to leverage the publicly available EDGE tool to achieve a minimum of 20% reduction in energy, water, and material use.

The challenge is open to architects, developers, researchers, educators, and emerging professionals across Africa, offering a unique platform to showcase innovative thinking while contributing to sustainable development on the continent.
