🌊 THE COUNTRY THAT BUILT A WALL AGAINST THE SEA
What if the place you call home is partly below sea level?
For centuries, the Netherlands has lived with that problem.
Water wasn't simply something outside the country.
It was a threat from every direction.
Then came the North Sea Flood of 1953.
A devastating storm surge breached coastal defences, flooding large parts of the southwest Netherlands and killing more than 1,800 people.
The country decided that rebuilding the old defences wasn't enough.
They needed to rethink their relationship with the sea.
And that thinking eventually produced one of the world's most extraordinary water-engineering systems:
The Delta Works.
Instead of constructing one enormous wall along the entire coastline, Dutch engineers created a network of dams, dikes, storm-surge barriers, sluices and movable gates designed to protect the country's vulnerable southwestern delta.
One of the most spectacular pieces is the Oosterscheldekering.
It stretches for roughly 9 kilometres across the Eastern Scheldt.
But engineers faced a difficult choice.
A completely closed dam would offer enormous flood protection—but it could also drastically change the estuary's saltwater ecosystem.
So they built something extraordinary:
A barrier that can remain open under normal conditions and close when a dangerous storm surge approaches.
It contains 65 enormous gates, each roughly 42 metres wide and weighing around 480 tonnes.
Most of the time, the sea is allowed through.
When the threat becomes serious, the gates can close.
Think about the engineering philosophy behind that.
They didn't try to eliminate the sea.
They designed a system that knows when to let it in—and when to shut it out.
Today, the Delta Works are not simply a collection of structures.
They are a demonstration of how an entire country can use engineering to adapt to its geography.
