THE ANCIENT FLOOD-CONTROL SYSTEM OF CHINA
Location: Dujiangyan, China 🇨🇳
How do you control a powerful river without building a giant dam?
Over 2,000 years ago, the Min River repeatedly flooded the Chengdu Plain.
Chinese engineers took a different approach.
They didn't try to stop the river.
They taught it where to go.
They carved channels and built diversion structures that split and redirected the river's flow.
During floods, excess water could be diverted away. During dry periods, water could be guided toward farmland.
The system worked largely through gravity, terrain and an understanding of the river itself.
No modern dam.
No electric pumps.
No automated gates.
Just engineering that worked with nature instead of against it.
And that may be Dujiangyan's greatest lesson:
You don't always control a river by stopping it.
Sometimes, you control it by giving it somewhere to go.
