BEYOND THE BALLOT: WIMDI HOSTS CONVERSATION ON ELECTION REPORTING, MEDIA ETHICS & SAFETY
The Women in Media Development Initiative (WIMDI) held its August webinar, “Beyond the Ballot: Women in Media, Reporting Elections, Mobilising Communities & Staying Safe,” bringing together media professionals and emerging journalists for an insightful conversation on responsible media practice.
The session featured Fidelis Mbah, International Journalist, and was moderated by Miss Glory Ohagwu.
One of the key messages from the session was the importance of preparation and learning the craft.
Speaking particularly to young and emerging journalists, Fidelis emphasised that entering the media space should not be about rushing to be seen or impressing people. Journalists need to understand the work, develop their skills and build the competence required to handle serious assignments.
The conversation also addressed professionalism and presentation. Journalists represent not only themselves but, in many cases, the organisations they work with. How they conduct themselves in the field therefore matters.
Another important discussion centred on asking difficult questions during elections. Journalists must be able to ask questions around electoral irregularities, fraud and other sensitive issues without becoming abusive or unnecessarily confrontational. Tough questions can still be asked with professionalism and respect.
Ethics in journalism was also a major part of the conversation from verifying information and being accurate to maintaining fairness and avoiding conclusions before the facts have been established.
With the increasing number of young people and Gen Z entering the media space, Fidelis also encouraged emerging journalists to focus on learning, building their skills and becoming good at the work, rather than simply chasing visibility.
The discussion further highlighted safety in media practice, particularly during election coverage. Journalists need to understand their environment, remain alert and know how to navigate difficult situations while still carrying out their responsibilities.
